TR ORDERS THE U.S. NAVY TO PREPARE FOR WAR

Just 10 days after the battleship Maine explodes, the Secretary of the Navy

leaves his office and Roosevelt becomes Acting Secretary for four hours. TR
wastes no time in cabling the Navy worldwide to prepare for war, ordering
ammunition and supplies, bringing in “experts” and going to Congress to ask for
authority to recruit as many sailors as needed. All the while, Spain continues to
protest its innocence.
