Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Championship Futurity-G1
DH-MH FAMOUS MOONSHINE
DH-MAMMY JAMMER
by John Moorehouse
The connections involved with MH Famous Moonshine and Mammy Jammer both learned the value of sharing after those two Paint horses dead-heated for the win in the $44,500 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Championship Futurity-G1 on Nov. 14 at Will Rogers Downs.
Seeing Mammy Jammer score the victory was no surprise; the filly came in as the post-time favorite having won the Pot O’ Gold Futurity in October. MH Famous Moonshine, meanwhile, was one of the biggest longshots in the field at 18-1 odds.
It marked the second win in eight starts for MH Famous Moonshine. Mammy Jammer reached the winner’s circle for the fourth time in nine outs. Both horses split the winner’s and runner-up shares of the purse, banking $12,618 each. That increased MH Famous Moonshine’s bankroll to $29,479, while Mammy Jammer now has earned $68,501.
Mary Hainline owns MH Famous Moonshine, who is trained by Eddie D. Willis and had Jimmy Brooks in the irons. Mammy Jammer is owned by Roy Kent Perkins, trained by Ray Enlow, and had Cody Wainscott aboard.
“We knew he was a pretty nice horse,” Charles Hainline, Mary’s husband, said of MH Famous Moonshine, who ran in the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 back in March at Remington Park. “We kind of expected him to run a good race. We knew he had talent.”
Enlow, who also bred Mammy Jammer out of the Paint mare Dashin DD, certainly had high hopes for the filly.
“She’s just a good solid mare and she comes from good breeding,” Enlow said. “I bred and raised her. Her mama’s a good mare and produced two or three really good race horses.”
“Anytime you win a stakes race, it’s a big deal,” stated Hainline, whose past performers include Major Tom ApHC and Ubuyillfly APHA, win-
ners of consecutive runnings of the 2014 & 2013 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. “We’ve had some exciting times.”
The outside of the track proved best on a sloppy course at Will Rogers; MH Famous Moonshine
and Mammy Jammr drew the two outside starting gates. Both also spent most of the race chasing down Power Fade, who broke on top, grabbed the early lead, and still had the advantage entering the stretch. MH Famous Moonshine and Mammy Jammer both caught up during the final yards and hit the wire simultaneously. The two horses covered the 400 yards in :19.866, each registering a 96 speed index.
