The photo on page 171 shows long time horse trainer John Cooper. John started his journey in the horse world as a roper, but quickly found himself involved in chariot racing, even winning the World Champion- ship Chariot Races. Around the same time, he was breaking a Thoroughbred colt for a man named Joe Davis, who suggested that John become a trainer. John got his first win in 1966 with the Thoroughbred Eddie Rain at Pocatello Downs. “I decided I liked that best...I’ve been doing it ever since,” he said. Blane Schvaneveldt convinced John
to head out to California and work for him at Bay Meadows. John’s wife Carol said, “We’ve been here ever since.”
Cooper is the trainer of nearly $20 mil- lion in earners and has trained many Cham- pions, including Chingaderos; Separatist; Sign Of Lanty; Moonist; Mr Doty Bars, with whom he won the 1979 Champion
of Champions-G1; and Cartel Jess Rockin, the 2019 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly with whom he won his richest race in the 2019 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1.
John was one victory away from being one of only three trainers to reach 1,500 wins at Los Alamitos, along with Blane Schvaneveldt and Paul Jones. Cooper achieved that milestone when he won his second Champion of Champions-G1 with Apollitical Pence on Dec. 12.
Now in his 80s, John says he quits every fall, “But then, I go look at the babies and I think, ‘Maybe there’s one more.’”
