SIRE SIDE AND LINEBREEDING
Painted Turnpike is not only the only horse to win the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown, but he became
the all-time leading money earning Paint racehorse. He earned $465,442 and the horse he overtook on the earnings list was Got Country Grip. The race record for Painted Turnpike shows 36 starts, 26 wins and 19 stakes wins. He earned three APHA World Championships and eight divisional titles from 2015 to 2018.
Painted Turnpike sired his first foals in 2018, including six foals, four starters, three ROM/ stakes winners. Those joining Power Fade in
the stakes category are Lone Star Park Paint & Appaloosa Futurity and American Paint Classic Futurity winner WF Turnpike Candy, and Tulsa State Fair Stakes winner Codigo.
When we look at the pedigree of Painted Turnpike, we see a well-bred stallion that has
a breeding pattern of 4x4x4 to First Down Dash through his sire and his dam. He is by PYC Paint Your Wagon by Corona Cartel by Holland Ease by First Down Dash. The dam of PYC Paint Your Wagon is Dashin Follies, who is out of Dashing Folly by First Down Dash. Then, we see that the dam of Painted Turnpike is High Class Turnpike by Royal Quick Flash by Royal Quick Dash by First Down Dash.
This breeding pattern looks interesting when we look at the pedigree of Fade
Shot. She has a breeding pattern of 3x4 to First Down Dash. This gives Power Fade a breeding pattern of 5x5x5x4x5 to First Down Dash, and when we add in Dashing Val by Dash For Cash, we get a breeding pattern of 6x6x6x5x6X5 to Dash For Cash through his sons First Down Dash and Dashing Val.
When I asked about the linebreeding pattern of Power Fade to First Down Dash, Kelly responded, “I don’t want to claim to be any genius or to be smart, but that is the way the cards fell. Sometimes I think it is smarter to be lucky than smarter to be smart.”
Fade Shot, the dam of Power Fade, is a daughter of Valdarama.
winner of $25,426 and a finalist in the 2018 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity. Her APHA produce record shows 12 foals with seven starters, four ROM and one stakes placed runner. Her leading money winner is Mildred Didrickson with APHA earnings of $36,979. The second leading APHA money winner is Ballesteros with $27,551. He was a multiple stakes qualifier in three Grade 1 stakes, including the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Derby. Valderama’s foals have earned a combined $127,341 in the AQHA and APHA.
Fade Shot, the dam of Power Fade, is a daughter of Valdarama. When we got to Fade Shot, Kelly responded, “Fade Shot was a
very good Paint race mare. But she had some issues with her knees. We didn’t see much
for Paints after their 2-year-old year. So, we elected to make a good broodmare out of
her and everything she throws is great. We have two really good foals out of her coming this year. One by Docs Best Card and one by CRM Livewire.”
Fade Shot made seven starts with two wins, one second and one third. She is a
stakes finalist in two stakes with a second in the 2016 Tulsa State Fair Stakes. She earned $24,223 in her short career.
The sire of Fade Shot is Fade To Fame, an unraced Paint by the legendary Dash Ta Fame. The APHA records show that Fade To Fame is the sire of only 10 foals with just three starters. In The Lane To Fame is the second starter and he was a finalist in Spots N Dots Handicap-G1, and the other starter is Rise To Fame, winner of two of eleven starts with earnings of $13,698.
The dam of Fade To Fame is the Paint mare Evanescence, a race winner of one race in eight starts. She was a finalist in the 2006 Graham Paint Futurity-RG1. She has 10 foals with four starters, two ROM and is by the legendary Paint sire Judys Linage. The dam of Evanescence is Wheel Six Fortunes by Marthas Six Moons.
Fade Shot is the dam of five foals with just two of racing age and they are both starters with one of them being our subject mare Power Fade. They are both ROM earners. The other starter is Dangerous Dan McGrew,
“Painted Turnpike proved everything at the track, and I think he is a good solid horse to breed your good quarter mares to that is going to be eligible to run as Paints. I am going to breed two good quarter mares plus Valdarama to him in the coming season.” - Garvan Kelly
