  BREEDING WITH A PLAN
The first thing a breeder has to learn
and implement is a plan to fulfill his goal
as a breeder of good racehorses. Mr. Kelly shared his philosophy on breeding a good racehorse, “Almost everything that I focus
on in planning my breedings is how do I get a 400- to 440-yard horse. I’m not interested in breeding horses that go 350-yards even though there are a lot of races at that level.
I focus on the classic distance of 440 yards and everything I do is directed toward that and, of course, sometimes you have to wait
a little longer. I think our record is much more satisfactory with three year olds than with two year olds early. You don’t see me running to many two year olds early. We
do a little bit of it, but a case in point is
O Donavan Rossa that finished second in the recent Black Gold Lads Championship Futurity. We sent him to Ruidoso, not with any hope of him winning but to get him out of the heat. They did a good job with him and he won his maiden in the Black Gold trial. We will send him to Los Al with the Winter Derby and the El Primero out there. So, I am absolutely interested in having good older horses.”
The philosophy of racing older horses at longer distance is in the plan for Power Fade. We will let Kelly fill us in, “I am very proud of Power Fade. She needs a good winter off. She has had a hard campaign and I think the outcome of the last race would had been different if the positions were reversed on the track and she would have the eight- or nine-hole and not down in the bog on the inside of the track. It
was one of those days when everything
was winning from the four-hole out. That is not sour grapes - that is just luck of the draw. I would like to see Power Fade put on 120 to 150 pounds over the winter
and will certainly race her as a three year old. But we might breed her after the Remington Park meet.”
He added this about Painted Turnpike, “Painted Turnpike proved everything at the track, and I think he is a good solid horse to breed your good Quarter Horse mares to that are going to be eligible to run as Paints. I am going to breed two good quarter mares plus Valdarama to him in the coming season.”
It was a near miss for 2020 having a second Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown Champion. But Power Fade’s narrow loss doesn’t diminish her success as the
2020 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown High Point Champion. Her title also stands as a tribute to her pedigree that was conceived by J. Garvan Kelly.
Power Fade’s sire is Painted Turnpike, whose first four runners, include two stakes winners in addition to Power Fade...
