Mexican Breeders Maturity
MALEFICO CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Adjustments to the 2020 racing program due to the pandemic included the cancel- lation of the Mexican Breeders Derby and those 10 runners for which the corresponding registration was paid were kept eligible to run in the 2021 Mexican Breeders Maturity.
The race was contested on March 21 over a distance of 440 yards and for a purse of $668,150 pesos (approx. $32,299 U.S.).
The race was clean from start to finish. From the break, Malefico Cartel captured
the lead and held it throughout the quarter
of a mile, widely dominating the group that included stablemate Rex Sambaso, to finish in front by 1 3/4-length. He stopped the clock in :21.26 for a 101 speed index, well directed by José Angel Ambrosio Medina.
Always a contentious runner, he ran straight and showed that he brings power for long distances in this category of runners. From 12 starts, his record is 7-3-1 including first place in the Mexican Breeders Futurity Challenge and now in the Mexican Breeders Maturity,
in addition to having placed second in the Garañones Futurity and in the Subasta Select
Derby. These achievements have been the main source for his accumulation of profits close to 4 million pesos.
Bred by Crianza de
Cuadra La Presita, he is the
product of the cross of lead-
ing stallion Danny Cartel
and La Chuchena (by This
Snow Is Royal) and runs for
Rancho El Suspiro. He is
trained by José Guadalupe
García “Lupillo” and Ismael
Ayala Salas, who together with José Angel Ambrosio represented the winning team during the award in the winner’s circle.
All participants were purchased at the 2018 Subasta Select Yearling Sale at the Hipodromo de las Americas, an event
in which Malefico Cartel was listed at $920,000 pesos ($47,187 U.S.), the highest price of the event. This is a figure he has multiplied with his results on the track.
Millionaire winner Rex Sambaso (Sambaso Dancer-The Answer Lady, Corona Cartel)
finished second under Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez García. He also belongs to Rancho El Suspiro and is trained by Ismael Ayala Salas.
Making his run on
the right side of the track, Taliban Chicks finished third under jockey José Manuel Cisneros. He is the son of Allens Cash, a 250-yard world record holder, and out of the mare Miss Chicks Perry (by
Chicks A Blazin). Bred by Benjamin Murillo Camargo, he is owned by Quinta Marian and trained by Rubén Romo Hernández.
Brillante Primavera (Long Gone-Shine On You), Brujo Garoo AT (Kangaroofirst- Evanazoom), Danny Corazon (Danny Cartel-In Your Honor), LA Whistlin Corona (Corona Silver-Whistlin Runaway), BR Centauro Del Sur (Southern Corona-Stage Gulch), GS Millonario (BBS Top Beduino- Separatist Jess) and Stela Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-Royal Stela) completed the order of finish.
