Mexican Bred Derby Challenge
JUANITO Y DANNY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
With 55 participants, this Derby’s qualify- ing trials were held on Feb. 28, restricted to three year olds born in Mexico, whose parents were physically in the country at the time of crossing. From these races the 10 best times were obtained, and were run in the final on March 14 on a 350-yard course and with a purse of $3,061,050 pesos (approx. $146,221 U.S.).
It was the filly Divas First Anita who recorded the best trial time at :17.269, followed very closely by Juanito Y Danny in :17.280, Easy Perry Cartel in :17.303 and Dance Saqqara with :17.318.
Juanito Y Danny was widely favored due to
his results in the 2020 season, which led him
to obtain the Mexican Champion title by the AQHA, in addition to other distinctions awarded by the Mexican Quarter Horse Association. The sorrel gelding fully met these expectations, and the Derby championship was awarded under the successful riding of Leonardo Vidaña. To do this, he significantly improved his qualifying time, now achieving :17.00 seconds for a 98 speed index.
His main rival was the filly Divas First Anita, who led the group only to succumb in
the final yards to the winner’s powerful closure.
Bred by Cuadra La Presita,
Juanito Y Danny is the son of
leading stallion Danny Cartel
and out of the mare Toles (by
Ought To Be First), a breeding
that has already produced
notable runners such as Soliat
and Juanita Cartel. Juanito Y
Danny belongs to Rancho El
Suspiro and is trained by José Guadalupe García, who is officially represented by trainer Ismael Ayala Salas. In 2020, Rancho El Suspiro also won this Derby with the filly Chispita Two, a half-sister of Juanito Y Danny.
With this race, he boosts his record to 5-0-1 from six starts, including the Subasta Select Futurity and a third place in the Garañones Futurity. His earnings increased by $1,285,641 pesos (approx. $61,412 U.S.), to approximately four million pesos.
Bred and owned by Cuadra Zamarrero, Divas First Anita was second under the direction
of Mario Alberto López Marmolejo. She is the daugh- ter of stallion Divas First Down out of Julies Lil Jess (by Mr Jess Perry) and was saddled by trainer Gregorio Alberto Razo Parra.
In third place was Easy Perry Cartel, ridden by Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez García. Bred by Everardo
Múzquiz Elguezábal, owner of the stallion Jesstified and the mare Tessas Decked Out (by Corona Cartel), Easy Perry Cartel is owned by Cuadra San Lorenzo and is trained by Alberto Fernández Pasten.
Mar Rojo (Xplorador-Marea Roja), Dance Saqqara (Jesstified-Saqqara), DK Platinum (Danny Cartel-Platinum Cash), Bonny Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-Bonny Wee Thing), Aint Eagle (Jabuti Eagle SA-Aint Yours), Shes A Corcel (El Corcel-Shes A Six Shooter) and Bliss Horse (Sea Horse Corona-Oceans Of Bliss) followed.
