AQHA John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge
DF FABULOUS WITCH
By Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
This race was the first for Quarter Horses after the restart of activities at the Hippodromo de las Americas following 6 1/2-months of suspen- sion due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As mentioned in our October issue on
page 190, these races were held without the presence of the public and under rigorous health measures, since Mexico City still presents a high risk of contagion under the “orange epidemiological traffic light.”
As a result of the pandemic, many two year olds who could have competed in this event made their season by playing in rigging races in the face of the uncertainty of the restart of activities at the racetrack. As a result, only five were registered, and the filly Bumble B Baby from the Valeria Cuadra did not enter. Thus, the action on the track was between three fillies and a colt, all maidens, to contest a prize of $728,089 pesos ($33,193 approx. US), at 350 yards.
The quartet performed cleanly through the distance, with the filly DF Fabulous Witch (#4) taking command of the action from the start,
completely dominating her rivals and crossing the finish line with a 2 1/2-length margin over their closest pursuer in the colt Ehecatl AT.
The filly covered the distance in :17.80 under the effective command of Angel Santillán. She is owned by the Cuadra
San Lázaro de Arará and
was saddled by former rider
Moisés González García, who
adds this first stakes to his
training record.
The prize for the winner was $436,853 pesos (approx. $19,916 US), opening her earnings account on her first outing on the track.
Bred in the United States
by Darling Farms, she is
a daughter of the stallion
One Fabulous Eagle in the
cross with Witch Trick, by
Favorite Trick TB. The filly was acquired by Luis Miguel Albores Gleason for $7,500 at the 2019
Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale in Oklahoma. The second-place spot was for the colt
Ehecatl AT, the only Mexican-bred in the small group. He is a son of Mr Jess Perry and out
of the mare Foo Foo Dust, and belongs to the
Cuadra San Luis Aculco and is conditioned by Fernando Figueroa Romero.
Finishing in third was
the blue-eyed filly Barbarann (One Fabulous Eagle– Californias Chick) under
the guidance of José Angel Ambrosio Medina. She is owned by the Cuadra El Mashta and is conditioned by trainer Rafael Rizo Ojeda.
The quartet was completed with VGW Daddys Girl (Big Daddy Cartel–Strawberry Style), who received orders
from his rider Alejandro Gómez Díaz for JJ Cuadra and trainer Rubén Romo Hernández.
DF Fabulous Witch triumphs in a valuable first outing at this track under the guidance of Angel Santillán.
