Jose Merced Gómez Orozco Classic
SC BABY JESS
By Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Three weeks before the Jose Merced Gómez Orozco Classic, SC Baby Jess also won
the Revelation Classic, but was disqualified
to eighth place for an infraction committed
on Separate Jets. It was a bad afternoon from which he now recovered by competing at a greater distance and as part of a more competi- tive group of rivals, with better statistics in his record. No doubt he arrived better prepared.
The Jose Merced Gómez Orozco Classic
was held on Oct. 25, 2020, in honor of the late horseman José Merced Gómez Orozco. The race is open to horses three years and older that compete at 400 yards, this time for a prize of $354,800 pesos ($16,816 US approx.). Among the nine entries were Reacher 16, winner of multiple stakes including the 2019 triple crown; JRS Coronas Shadow, winner of the Champion of Champions that year; The Deadline, winner of the Inaugural Classic last February; Temptobthebest, who won the recent AMCCCCM Classic; Hiclass Patriot, who in 2019 won the Gabriel Cue Sacre Classic, to mention a few, among which we must also include SC Mr Sweet Jess, full brother of SC Baby Jess, who won the 2019 Félix Bañuelos Jiménez Classic (after a disqualification from Chocazoom) and placed third in the Derby Las Américas.
The race had its complication at the start
when BP Southern Eagle fell and made the race riderless after Jose Angel Ambrosio Medina was dismounted, affecting Reacher 16 and marking the result of both. The others advanced with a notable leadership of The Deadline (#3) along the inside track, SC Baby Jess (#6) through the center of the track and JRS Coronas Shadow (#1A) on the right side. As they advanced, it was the mighty SC Baby Jess and his rider Rosalino Alcudia who captured first place, leaving JRS Coronas Shadow in second, with the Deadline in third.
Such a result was achieved in :19.36 (SI 98), being the first stakes for the 4-year-old colt, owned by Cuadra Par de Reyes, who was saddled by Gregorio Alberto Razo Parra.
Bred in the United States by Álvaro Sepúlveda, the colt is by One Sweet Jess and out of Built For Fun (by Separatist). In his eight starts he has a record of 3-1(1)-0, this being the first classic, for which he added $177,400 pesos (approx. $8,411 US) to his account. He was a finalist in the Alfredo Castro Rea Classic two years ago.
JRS Coronas Shadow placed second, with Yair Daniel Baez at the helm. The 6-year-old gelding is by Coronas Leaving You and out of Shadow Of Colors (by Dashing Val) owned by Cuadra Los Gavilanes, where he is trained by Ruben Romo Garcia.
In third was the 4-year-old colt The Deadline, which received orders from José Manuel Cisneros. He is by Favorite Cartel and out of Flying Regal (by A Regal Choice), owned by Cuadra Los Arrallanes and saddled by Luis Eduardo Flores Gómez.
The other participants were: SC Mr Sweet Jess (One Sweet Jess-Built For Fun),
Humble Lady (Deefirst-Royal
Native Noblesse), Reacher 16
(Inseperable-Tinys Corona Queen), Temptobthebest (Tempting Dash-Thebest Isyet Tocome), Hiclass Patriot (Jet Black Patriot-Hiclass Quick) and BP Southern Eagle (One Dashing Eagle-BP Shes Southern) who lost the rider.
