Merrick. He was a foundation sire for Merrick, who bred the great Easy Jet by Jet Deck and many more. Nassak was a successful racehorse that was favored in the 1928 Preakness Stakes where he finished seventh after a bad trip. He was a seven-time stakes winner, including the 6 furlong Sanford Stakes.
Carter bought a mare, a yearling colt and 15 yearling fillies on a visit to the Corralitos Ranch that took place in 1944. Carter specifically wanted the blood of Nassak, as they wanted to add size to their horses. They only found one Nassak filly and bought her. The story says that they looked for three days, and she was the only filly they found, and her name was Caprica.
One pen had three yearling fillies named Midnight Blue, Midnight Star and Belle Of Midnight, who were all sired by Midnight Jr. Carter bought Midnight Blue and Midnight Star, but as horses will be horses, Belle Of Midnight didn’t want to be left behind. When she made a fuss by running back and forth, Bissel cut her price and she went to a new home. It appears Midnight Blue is the one with a race record.
According to the article “James Carter’s Magic Touch” that appeared in the July 1970 Quarter Racing World (now Speedhorse), she had 11 wins in 15 starts.
The next move for Carter was his purchase of Barred from Melville Haskell
in 1946. Barred was a AAA rated son of Three Bars and out of the mare Ready by Red Joe of Arizona by Joe Reed P-3. Barred was a successful racehorse with 42 starts, 16 wins, 13 seconds and four thirds and total earnings of $9,229.
Belle Of Midnight was unraced in AQHA records and became the dam of
15 foals with seven race starters, five ROM and one stakes placed runner in I’m Prohibition, who was second in the 1967 Portland Meadows Derby. When bred to Barred, Belle Of Midnight produced five foals representing three of her five ROM runners. Her first foal by Barred was Miss Night Bar, who was foaled in 1950 and she earned her AAA/ROM with 26 starts, six wins, four seconds, one third and earnings of $2,702. Midnight Bar was her next ROM runner with a AA rating on the track. Barred’s Belle, the third ROM runner out of Belle Of Midnight, also had a AA rating. The Belle Of Midnight foals that were by Barred include Midnight Bar, who is not only an ROM runner, but the 1961 AQHA High-Point Pole Bending Horse; and Barbeque, who was the 1962 AQHA High-Point Pole Bending Stallion.
