TIMBERGOLD
by John Moorehouse
After finishing second in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity a year ago, Timbergold returned to Century Mile as a three-year-old and scored her first stakes victory—tak- ing first place in the $17,656 Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby on Aug. 7.
Timbergold has reached the win- ner’s circle twice in three starts thus far in 2020, including her 350-yard July 24 Alberta Stallino Stakes Derby trial in :18.295 to top the qualifying ladder.
Timbergold proved to be the fastest in the stakes final as well, breaking well from the 2-post, quickly grab- bing the lead, and remaining in front. Joe Halerewich, Jack McCurdy, and Greg Campkin own Timbergold.
Halerewich also trains the filly, who finished the derby in :17.951 for a
97 speed index with Dwight Lewis aboard. The win produced an $8,395 payday, increasing the filly’s total earnings to $28,733.
The filly was winless in 10 races as a rookie, with the runner-up effort in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity arguably the chief highlight.
Roger Gauthier bred Timbergold, the first stakes winner out of winner Gilded Gold who was a finalist in the Ruidoso Derby Challenge-G3. She has produced 100% money earners from three starters.
Double Cruise (BD Cruiser-Eye Cruise), who bested Timbergold in
last year’s Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity, finished second this time. Tom Kenway owns and trains the gelding, who had Martin Ortiz in the irons. Ralph Danard owns third-place finisher Ivory Fame (Ivory League-RD Taras Fame), a Kirsty Luft trainee with Trevor Simpson aboard.
Sasses Loki (First Timber-Sass
N Dass), Yuma Class (Three Ten
To Yuma B-Class Acte), First Pulse (First Timber-Snowbound Star Lady), Quarter Sawn (First Timber-Starlite Delight), Speedy Rae (Its All About Speed-Erica Rae), RJ Fly Bye (Special Fly Bye-RJ Bitterroot Babe) and First To Clear (First Timber-Howdoyado) completed the order of finish.
