Ontario Bred Derby
HANOVER HILL CHALSEE
by John Moorehouse
After topping the qualifying lad- der for the Ontario Bred Derby, Hanover Hill Chalsee came back and won the $43,085 stakes held at Ajax Downs on Sept. 2.
The three-year-old chestnut filly logged her fourth win in nine career starts, with all of those victories coming this year. This marked the first stakes victory for Hanover Hill Chalsee, who was home-bred by the Picov Cattle Company.
The filly broke from the 6-post and was in the middle of the pack entering the stretch, then made
a driving finish under jockey Ed Walton to hit the wire first by a head. Aided by a 20 mph tailwind,
Hanover Hill Chalsee generated an 85 speed index and brought home a $17,234 payday that improved her total earnings to $37,954.
Trained by Richard Kennedy, Hanover Hill Chalsee entered the derby as the top qualifier after fin- ishing her 300-yard heat in :15.653 on Aug. 19. She wasn’t quite that quick in the stakes final, covering the distance in :15.707.
Hanover Hill Chalsee now has posted three straight victories and becomes the first stakes winner among the three foals produced by her dam, lightly raced Secret Sugarwoman.
One Kool Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-One Kool Bud), the
post-time favorite, finished second for owner Belinda Taggart and trainer Jason Pascoe. Helen Vanek did the riding. Eazy Street (Mighty B Valiant- Easily Holland), a multiple stakes win- ner, placed third for Carol and Jaime Robertson. Bryn Robertson is the trainer and Tony Phillips was aboard.
Rowdy And Bodacious (Bodacious Jess-Make Us A Miracle), Silken
Siri (Desirio-Silken Memories),
Hot Like Fyre (Look At Magics Form-Extravagant Moves), Get On The Bus Gus (Streakin Six Cartel- Into Fast) and Hey There Giorgi
Boy (Giorgino-Mood For A Dash) completed the field. Shaken and Shez Perry Fiesty scratched.
