Bryan Hawk stands Painted Turnpike and CRM Livewire, who are two of the biggest sire names in Paint racing, which is how
Hawk ended up with his first World Champion, Smithworks, a son of Painted Turnpike.
Matt Whitekiller trained and later co- owned Painted Turnpike, the first winner of the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Triple Crown and a multiple World Champion. Painted Turnpike is still the all-time leading Paint earner, with $463,905, and one day Hawk and Whitekiller were discussing the sire.
“If I’m going to promote your stud,” Hawk said, “I’d really like to have a nice Painted Turnpike to run.”
Whitekiller had bred Smithworks, and he told Hawk that “I wouldn’t sell him to anyone but you.” The colt had a rocky start in life being born via emergency C-section, with his dam, Shesa Mighty Chick, not surviving.
At first, Whitekiller wasn’t sure that Smithworks could get to the races, especially after the baby didn’t take to a surrogate mare. But by the time Smithworks was a long yearling, he looked like a good prospect and so Whitekiller sold him to Hawk. Whitekiller and Ty Blackwell trained Smithworks during his World Champion season.
“He ran in five futurities and made the finals in all of them,” said Hawk.
Smithworks captured the Oklahoma Paint and Appaloosa Futurity by a 1/2-length. In the May 29 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity, Smithworks came out of the gate per- fectly and defeated Capo Cabana by a head.
Smithworks not only developed into a talented racehorse, banking $215,689 for the season, he has plenty of color, smarts, and personality, mak- ing him an exciting stallion prospect. Hawk says that Smithworks is one of the smartest horses he has been around.
“A smart horse will always win a lot more races than one that’s just fast,” Hawk said. “He’s a stallion, and you could literally put a 2-year-old kid on him and ride him around. That’s just how gentle he is. He’s a nice one.”
