Dan and Kaye Jones of Kemp, Texas, almost had too much of a good thing in 2021. Their terrific Paint stallion CRM Livewire
had blessed them with three top older runners: Southern Electric, Live Moonshine, and Bully Pulpit.
“We had our three older horses running against each other a lot,” said Kaye. “I guess the exciting part is that we were running one-two quite a bit.”
Southern Electric, the 2019 World Champion Solid Paint-Bred Running Horse, repeated as a World Champion in 2021. Live Moonshine, the 2020 World Champion Running Paint Horse, was named the 2021 Champion Aged Horse and Aged Gelding. And in 2021, Bully Pulpit became a Champion for the 5th consecutive year, getting his 2nd consecutive title as Distance Champion.
Southern Electric and Live Moonshine vied against each other all season, but Southern Electric came away with the best record. In seven starts, the gelding won three stakes and ran second in three others.
His first stakes victory and first outing of the year came in the Paul Harber Stakes at Remington Park. Southern Electric rolled out of the gate on top, crushing the field by 1 3/4 lengths. Live Moonshine finished third.
“We had some really nice races with him,” said Kaye. “He’s just such a smooth-moving animal. He’s just fun to watch.”
All three of the Joneses’ older runners met in the Mister Lewie Memorial Stakes at Remington. Live Moonshine and Southern Electric ran one- two, with Bully Pulpit unplaced.
Southern Electric was the Joneses’ sole entrant at Sam Houston in the Colors of Texas Paint Maturity-G2, where he won by a 1/2-length.
The final stakes victory for Southern Electric came at Lone Star Park in the Karen Utecht Memorial Stakes. Southern Electric dueled with VP Cold Strong Heart, to score by a neck.
Southern Electric in 2021 raised his lifetime earnings to $291,278. Dan and Kaye, who were also named the leading Paint owners of 2021, are enjoying their homebred and expect to race him again in 2022.
