Paint Your Lips made her maiden out in the spring of 2020 at Remington Park. It took just one more start before owner/breeder
Jeff Adams decided to pull her off the track. “She was more of a late bloomer,” Adams
explained.
In her first out of 2021, Paint Your Lips was
last away from the gates and finished a distant seventh. Then, something changed. Two weeks later, in a maiden claiming at Remington, she got to the winner’s circle for the first time in her career. Then she went wire-to-wire in an allowance, also at Remington, on May 20.
“Once she won that first race, everything kind of pulled together,” Adams noted.
Paint Your Lips added back-to-back wins once more in the fall, taking consecutive allow- ance races at Will Rogers Downs.
Four-year-old filly Paint Your Lips is by Hes Relentless AQHA, who holds one graded stakes victory and has accumulated more than $616,000.
Adams also home-bred Paint Your Lips’ dam, Paint This Kitty, a 2010 mare whose three wins included a first-place effort in the 2014 Colors of the Wind Paint & Appaloosa Stakes.
This is the third Appaloosa Horse Club Horse of the Year that Adams’ organization has produced in recent years. In 2019, the award went to his gelding D Railed. And he bred the 2020 award winner, Jess Cruzin.
Dee Keener, the five-time APHA trainer title winner, trains Paint Your Lips.
“I’ll be honest with you, if it wasn’t for Dee Keener, I probably wouldn’t have racehorses,” Adams said. “My horses are what they are because of him.”
Racing on the Oklahoma and Texas circuits, Paint Your Lips finished ninth in the Colors of the Wind, then finished fourth in the Don Drake Paint & Appaloosa Memorial.
As the month of March began and Adams celebrated yet another award in his stable of Appaloosas, Paint Your Lips was starting work- outs to prepare for her 2022 campaign.
“I’m just fixing this week to put her back
in training,” he said. “The first condition book came out for Remington and there really wasn’t anything for her in the month of March.”
