Owner Bryan Hawk had his second consecutive World Champion Paint when Livewires Turnpike was named
the 2022 Solid Paint-Bred World Champion. The gelding followed Smithworks, the World Champion Running Horse of 2021.
“I never had one, and then I had two in a row,” said Hawk. “We’re very thankful for Verna Pevehouse and Matt Whitekiller, and Kaye Jones, who owns CRM Livewire.”
The late Nolan Pevehouse bred Livewires Turnpike, a son of CRM Livewire out of Wagon On Turnpike. Hawk bought Livewires Turnpike as a yearling and his dam from Nolan’s wife, Verna. Whitekiller, Livewires Turnpike’s trainer, had trained both the sire and dam.
Livewires Turnpike did his early running at Remington Park, but he competed all year and won stakes at Remington, Will Rogers Downs, and Lone Star Park. At Remington, he debuted in the trials for the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. Tripped by a foe early, Livewires Turnpike never gave up.
“He basically fell down in the gates and spotted the field 3 1/2-lengths, and he still came back and ran third,” Hawk said.
Though he didn’t qualify for the final, he made short work of the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Juvenile, to triumph by 1 1/4-lengths.
Third in the PSBA American Classic Futurity-G1 and fourth in the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, Livewires Turnpike was closing fast in both. Hawk elected to bypass Fair Meadows in order to have the gelding ready for a strong end of the year. The strategy paid off because Livewires Turnpike never lost again during the season.
At Will Rogers, Livewires Turnpike destroyed a field in his trial for the Pot O’ Gold Futurity-G1 by 3 1/4-lengths. He returned in the final to win again, this time by 1 3/4-lengths.
Livewires Turnpike completed his season at Lone Star Park winning his trial and the finals to the Texas Hero Futurity-G1. This time he vanquished foes in the trial by 2 1/4-lengths and closed out the season with a 1-length victory in the final.
“He’s just a special horse, with the heart that he has,” Hawk said.
