KALI K
by Michael Cusortelli
Luis Marquez’s Kali K was a prompt 7-10 favorite in the $17,850 Rocky Mountain Championship for Colorado-breds at Arapahoe Park on Sept. 10.
Prepped by Alexander Orozco, Kali K covered 400 yards in :20.009, and her margin of victory was a neck from Kickin Good Time. Martin Osuna rode the 4-year-old daughter of the One Famous Eagle stallion One Fabulous Eagle.
Kali K was bred by Darling Farms, and she was stretching out in distance off of her 1/2-length win as the 11-10 choice in the 350-yard Pen Pal Stakes at Arapahoe Park on Aug. 13. The brown mare is out
of A Secret Episode, a winning daughter of 2004 All American Futurity-G1 winner No Secrets Here. She traces back to her third dam Last Episode, a daughter of the Dash For Cash stallion Bold Episode who won the 1992 Longhorn Futurity at Manor Downs.
Campaigned in two states, including New Mexico, Kali K has won nine of 14 races, including three at 400-yards, and the $10,710 winner’s share of the Rocky Mountain Championship purse increased her earnings to $127,119. The filly’s four lifetime stakes victories include the 2021 Mile High Futurity and last year’s Lucille Rowe Derby for Colorado-bred sophomores.
Kickin Good Time (Jess Good Candy-Kickin Escalation) was second for owner George L. Seward. Jhaciel Soto rode the mare for trainer Shawna Manriquez.
Ducheck JQM (Duponte-Shescheckinumout) finished third a head behind Kickin Good Time, while earning $1,785 for his owner Alex Torres- Casas, who also prepped the 3-year-old colt. Jarret Journet rode Ducheck JQM.
Lightning Jess (Jess Lips-Lightening Sparked) ran fourth and was followed by Indeed (Wagon Tales-Dancing Iam), Jess No Secrets (No Secrets Here-Jess Breeze), and Skysthalimitcarver (Wave Carver-Lonely Dove).
EYE LIVE FOR CANDY
by Elle Summers
Collecting her third stakes win at Ajax Downs, Eye Live For Candy powered away in a wire-to-wire win in the $22,603 Princess Maturity on Aug. 16.
The filly crossed the finish line a full length ahead and stopped the timer in :20.010, earning a 97 speed index.
Eye Live For Candy’s previous stakes wins at Ajax Downs include the 2022 Princess Derby and Picov Derby, along with a second in the 2021 Alex Picov Memorial Futurity and a third in the 2023 Norman Picov Maturity. Owned by Milena Kwiecien, Eye Live For Candy was piloted by J.B. Botello and was saddled by trainer Jason Pascoe.
Klay Hinck bred the brown filly out of Eyesa Candy Maker, who has placed in multiple graded stakes including third place finishes in both the 2008 Remington Park Derby-G1 and the 2007 Black Gold Futurity Championship-G3.
Jess A Deal (Dealagame-Jess Marcy) crossed the wire third, but was moved to second due to JTC Lil Moonbar being disqualified from second to fourth for interfering with a foe. The 2016 mare is owned by Marie Broadsotck and Picov Cattle Co. and is trained by James Bogar. Ramiro Castillo had the riding assignment.
A homebred for trainer Chantelle Bourgeois, Summers Grace (Look At Magics Form-Winning Situation) placed third under jockey Cassandra Jeschke. The mare placed fifth in the 2021 Ontario Sires Stakes Derby.
JTC Lil Moonbar (Jess Twice Cash-Shinin Moonbar) was disqualified from second to fourth. Favorite Pearl (Favorite Cartel-Super Perla Negra), Oh My Gawd (Wave Carver-Andaley Okey), SW Snowmagicallykool (Maryland Magic-Barbie Kool), Princesss Leia (Look At Magics Form-Katies Award), and First Golden Rose (First Timber-Madam Goldilocks) complete the order of finish. Ice Cream Cartel was scratched.
SUGAR N PRIDE
by Kristen Moore
With a clean wire-to-wire run, Sugar N
Pride won the $44,857 Ontario Sires’ Stakes Futurity at Ajax Downs on Sept. 13 by 1 1/4 lengths. Seated by jockey Rachael Isaacs, the chestnut gelding immediately secured a healthy lead on the rest of the field and covered the 330 yards in a time of :17.397, earning himself a speed index 81.
Owner George Coleman received $17,944 from the win, and the gelding now has total career earnings of $31,824. Sugar N Pride is trained by Bob Broadstock and placed second in the Ontario Bred Futurity at Ajax Downs on Aug. 2.
Sugar N Pride was bred by Heste Sports
Inc., and is the first stakes winner out of Lady Pagrana. The mare has produced 8 winners from her first 8 starters, and holds a progeny earnings of just over a quarter of a million dollars.
Snow Magically Sweet (Maryland Magic-Sweet Little Chivato) and jockey Alexis Sanchez covered a lot of ground in the stretch for a game second. The black filly is owned by Milena Kwiecien and trained by Jason Pascoe. The filly was the winner of the Ontario Bred Futurity in August.
Fiesty Feebee (Sugarman Perry-Chissled And Fiesty) and jockey Ed Walton closed well, just missing second by a nose. She is owned and trained by Richard W. Kennedy.
