the beginning. He is trained by Michael Joiner and his jockey is Agustin Silva.
The connections got a glimpse of his potential in the early stages of his training. He showed that potential in a Ruidoso Downs schooling race on May 3. He set
the second fastest time of :15.380 of the 22 schooling races. From this point, he went
to the May 26 Ruidoso Futurity trials. He faced off with Dark NME, finishing second to her to earn an 86 speed index. Neither horse qualified to the finals. The key to this performance is in the race comments that indicates he was “fractious” in the gate. He came back for the June 30 Rainbow Futurity trials. This time he was second to Balanced Hero, and again you see the comments
“fractious” in the gate and he failed to qualify for the finals.
It was determined that to reach the potential they saw in him, they needed to work on the gate problem. In post-race interviews, Michael Joiner reported that they took Cowboys Gun Z to the starting gate and stood him in the gate. It took 20 to 25 trips to the gate, and it paid off when he started on the second day of All American trials in race #9 with a great start. Breaking straight and running straight down the track and leading all the way to qualify with a time of :21.576 as the fastest time of the second day of trials.
When the finals came around, the question had to be would the gate training
still be in effect? When the gates opened in the All American Futurity finals, the question was answered as he broke straight with a slight bump from the #8 horse Devastating and again he ran a straight path leading
from the start in a gate to wire performance. The potential was fulfilled with the win and Cowboys Gun Z secured the $1.5 million winner’s share in a time of :21.574 with regular rider Agustin Silva in the saddle. Train Station V finished 1/2-length back with Dark NME a neck behind him. The rest of the field hit the wire in the following order: Flyin Rabbit 123 (fourth), Dashing Tres (fifth), Corner Pocket 123 (sixth),
AJ Precious Jewel (seventh), Devastating (eighth) and Cuz Lightyear (ninth).
