The pedigree history of Cowboys Gun Z through the dam side of the pedigree begins with Carver Farms of Noble, Oklahoma.
A recent visit with Kay Carver Patino filled us in on how this family of horses came together. She recalled how it started, saying, “This history goes back to the 1970’s when my dad Ralph Carver first got into the horse business. He partnered with Steve VanBebber on a mare named Pana Doll (the fifth dam of Cowboys Gun Z). They bred her to Charlie Bird, a stud that Steve ran and was successful with early in his career. They produced My Strawberry Wine, and she produced Pocket Profit, my dad’s best runner. He ran out over
$309,000 and had a speed index of 108.” Pana Doll, the dam of My Strawberry
Wine, was an ROM race mare with 8 starts with one win, one second and one third. She was a finalist in the 1964 Kansas Futurity. She produced six foals with one starter that went unplaced in one official start.
The sire of Pana Doll was Panama Ace, who was second in the first All American Futurity behind Galobar. He made 40 starts, finishing first, second or third in 14 of his races. He was the 1959 Champion Two-Year- Old Colt. He sired 18 ROM runners with one stakes winner in Panama Pa, winner of the 1970 Official C Distance Stakes, and four stakes placed runners including Miss Panama Bars, second in 1972 Steel Valley Championship. His daughters produced the earners of $246,632 with 38 ROM and four stakes winners including Charming Talent, winner of the 1970 Golden Spread Futurity, and Cinco De Marzo, winner of the 1972 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby.
Panama Ace was bred by Art Pollard, a prominent breeder in Arizona. He bred
and owned the legendary Lightning Bar and had a broodmare band that included the World Champion Queenie, Miss Bank, Miss Panama, Della P and Hula Girl P. Panama Ace was sired by Spotted Bull, who is the sire of Hijo The Bull, who was the broodmare sire of Easy Six. He was also the sire of Hijo Beauty, the dam of Go Effortlessly the dam of Special Effort. Spotted Bull was sired by Bull Dog and out of Spotted Beauty by Man O’ War.
The dam of Panama Ace was Miss Panama, one of the great race mares of the 1940’s. She won a number of important races including the 1949 Tucson World’s Championship Quarter Mile. She went on
to produce runners like Panama Ace and Pana Bar, who was the 1958 Champion Two- Year-Old Colt. These two colts helped Miss Panama earn the AQHA Dam of Distinction Award. Miss Panama was sired by Ace Of Diamonds and out of Dixie 18 by Little Dick by Sleepy Dick.
The dam of Pana Doll was Garcia Doll, an ROM race mare that was stakes placed with a second in the 1957 Southwestern Futurity. She was first, second or third in 15 of her 34 starts. Garcia Doll was the dam
