SHUGS CHARLIE
A 35-1 longshot in a field of 11 state-bred fillies and mares, Shugs Charlie unleashed a strong stretch rally to win the October 30, $125,000 New Mexico Classic Cup Distaff Sprint Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Shugs Charlie covered 6 furlongs in 1:10.85 while defeating 7-2 second choice For Markeese by 1 1/4 lengths. Christian Ramos rode the 5-year-old bay daughter of Shame On Charlie for owners Humberto and Karla J. Munoz, and trainer Filiberto Quiroz.
Shugs Charlie was bred by Barbara J. Brown. The mare is one of seven official black-type
stakes winners from 36 starters sired by Shame On Charlie, a winning son of 1998 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Indian Charlie. Racing in New Mexico and California from 2006-10, Shame On Charlie earned $22,417 from 13 starts.
Shame On Charlie has sired the earners
of more than $2.1 million from seven crops, including multiple stakes winner Indian Tiva, and stakes winners Nostrangrtotherain and Shame On Powers. A full brother to 2007 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner and two-time champion Indian Blessing, the stallion is owned by Barbara J. Brown and stands at The Quarter Company at Chamberino, New Mexico.
Shugs Charlie’s dam, the winning Diabolical mare Shug’s Spirit, has produced two winners from as many starters, including Champ Spirit, a full brother to Shugs Charlie who won the 2020
New Mexico Classics Juvenile Championship (R) at Zia Park. The mare’s second dam, the Holy Bull mare Bugs Day, foaled three winners from four starters, including Got Aces, a winning full brother to Shug’s Spirit who ran third in the 2013 C.O. “Ken” Kendrick Memorial Stakes (R) at SunRay Park, and True Heat, a half-brother
to Shug’s Spirit who finished second in the 2015 Mountain Top Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs and 2016 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby (R) at Sunland Park.
Shugs Charlie’s third dam, the winning Oh Say mare Wumps, ran third in the 1996 Batna Stakes at Pimlico. The mare traces back to her fourth dam, Babee, a daughter of the Native Dancer stallion Jig Time who won the 1976 Constitution Stakes at Keystone Racetrack in Pennsylvania.
A 1973 foal, Babee produced Ms. Starlight, a winning and stakes-placed half-sister to Wumps.
During the Albuquerque Downs summer meet, Shugs Charlie finished third, 1 1/4 lengths behind winner Bella Dona, in the 6 1/2-furlong, $100,000 Carlos Salazar Stakes (R) on August 27. All told, she has won five of 24 races, and
the $72,000 winner’s share of the New Mexico Classics Distaff Sprint Championship purse increased her bankroll to $244,099. Shugs Charlie’s stakes resume includes a three-quarter length victory in the open 6 1/2-furlong, $75,000 Toni Samora Memorial Stakes at SunRay Park on May 21.
Quatro ran third, 1 3/4 lengths behind the winner, and was followed by Tutta Terlingua, Bikini Time, Caycee’s Mark, Sheza Dandy R F, 17-10 favorite Proofsinthepuddin, Tight Fittin Jeans, Sexy Bikini Model and Rox From Navarone.
For Markeese brought in a three-race win streak that included a wire-to-wire, two-length victory in a 6-furlong non-winners-of-three allowance race for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at Albuquerque Downs on September 17.
A homebred 4-year-old Marking filly racing for Nancy L. Lock, For Markeese has won three of six races and has banked $89,518, of which $84,118 has been pocketed from four starts this season.
Quatro is a homebred 3-year-old Mr. Gold Mover filly owned by Robert M. Driggers and Ben Lee Ivey. Quatro has won four of 17 races and has earned $87,702.
Shugs Charlie’s winning connections include owners Humbero and Karla Munoz, trainer Filberto Quiroz and jockey Christian Ramos.
