A disqualification following a stewards’ inquiry allowed No Mires A La Luna to win the October 31, 440-yard Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1) for state-bred Quarter Horses at Zia Park.
HS Paul Walker actually crossed the wire first, 1 1/4 lengths in front of No Mires A La Luna. However, HS Paul Walker was disqualified from first and placed fourth for breaking out at the start and bumping Don Chuy C, potentially costing that rival a better placing.
Trained by Ebert Munoz for owner Byron Woodard, No Mires A La Luna covered his quarter-mile trip in :21.903, and his official margin of victory was a neck from Bigg Dee, who was moved up from third to second. Noe Garcia Jr. rode the homebred 6-year-old First Moonflash gelding, who pocketed the $73,200 winner’s share of a $125,000 purse.
No Mires A La Luna was stretching out
in distance off of his ninth-place finish, 2 3/4 lengths behind winner Hesa Party Wagon, in
the October 9, 350-yard James Isaac Hobbs Stakes (G2) at Zia Park. The gelding’s sire, First Moonflash, was the AQHA champion aged stallion in 2009. A son of 2002 AQHA champion 2-year-old colt First To Flash, First Moonflash earned $969,828 from 25 starts and won 10 graded stakes while racing between 2007-09.
First Moonflash entered stud in 2010. From 10 crops, the stallion has sired the earners of
more than $24.9 million, including AQHA champions Flash And Roll, Handsome Jack Flash and Foxy Moonflash, as well as 2014 All American Derby (G1) winner Too Flash For You and graded stakes winner and 2014 All American Futurity (G1) runner-up Mad About The Moon. The stallion died after a battle with laminitis on May 29, 2019.

Raced in three states, including Texas and Oklahoma, No Mires A La Luna has won eight of 34 outs and he has earned $658,805. The gelding has banked $132,300 from seven starts this season, and his two wins include a half-length victory in the 440-yard, $75,000 First Moonflash Maturity (RG2) for New Mexico-breds at Albuquerque Downs on September 11. No Mires A La Luna’s six career stakes scores include the 2019 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs and the 2020 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship, and he also ran third, three- quarters of a length behind winner Apocalyptical Jess, in the 2018 All American Futurity (G1).
Don Chuy C was placed third and was followed officially by HS Paul Walker, Fly On
Down, HS Hawk, Dragon On Ice, Man Of Faith and Spiritonthemountain.
Bigg Dee banked the $24,400 runner-up share of the purse to bring his earnings to $502,304 from 22 races for owner Rex Wells, who purchased the 4-year-old Big Daddy Cartel gelding as a yearling for $30,000 at the 2019 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Bigg Dee has won five stakes, including the February 12, 350-yard Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park, and the August 6, 400- yard Zia Stakes (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.
