The Governor’s Cup Futurity is the biggest win of his career as an owner.
“I’m thrilled, happy, and full of emotions,” Hurtado said. “This filly has done her work nicely since the beginning and has shown that she has power. Her trainer, Felix Gonzalez, has done a great job. Things have gone well and tonight it was our turn.”
Third in a maiden race and unplaced in
a Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity trial, Frivolous broke her maiden by winning her trial for the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, qualifying the fourth fastest. In the final, she had trouble and finished sixth. However, she bounced back to capture her July 9 Governor’s Cup Futurity trial as the fastest qualifier.
“We bought her at the sale here at Los Alamitos last year,” said Hurtado, “but we never second-guessed the purchase because we knew that she was worth it.”
Hurtado paid $80,000 for Frivolous, buying her from breeder Dr. Edward C. Allred at the 2021 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. With the Governor’s Cup Futurity victory, Frivolous has earned more than twice her purchase price, with a total bankroll of $173,150.
Hurtado, who is in the construction business, has a breeding operation in Acton, California, and his family also operates a ranch in Zacatecas. Clanfield Act’s runners include Ventura Jess JQM, an earner of $98,203, all of that earned at Los Alamitos.
“We have a couple of stallions, including one named Hunting Eagle (a son of One Dashing Eagle),” said Hurtado. “We have about 20 mares, mostly broodmares. We are looking forward to future babies from the combination of Ventura Jess JQM with Favorite Cartel, Corona Cartel, and One Dashing Eagle.”
Allred bred Frivolous in California from homebred Nymph, whose four stakes wins included the 2016 California Breeders’ Debutante Stakes, like the Governor’s Cup Futurity part of Los Alamitos’ California Champions program. Allred also bred and raced the second dam, Elans Last, who has produced stakes winners Chance To Excel, Chance To Fire, and Chance It Now. The third dam is 1987 All American Futurity-G1 winner and millionaire Elans Special.
Nymph has produced five winners
from eight starters. Those runners include Nymphette, winner of the California Breeders’ Debutante Stakes the day after the Governo’s Cup Futurity; stakes winner Monopolist,
who finished second in the Spencer L.
Childers California Breeders’ Championship Handicap-RG1 on the July 31 card; and Nevada Charles, who ran third in the Governor’s Cup Derby-RG2, also on July 31. Thus, Nymph was represented by four offspring over the two nights
of California Champions stakes, with two wins, a second, and a third.
George and Ruben Villalobos’ homebred Required First (First Down Dash-No Tools Required) finished second. Jairo Rangel rode the colt for trainer Jose Flores. Required First has one win, three seconds, and one third in five starts.
Ruben Lozano piloted Attacker (Fly Thru The Fire-Attack The Cartel) to third for owner Oscar Parra and trainer Valentin Zamudio. Still a maiden, Attacker has one second in three prior starts.
Turbeau (Favorite Cartel-Babe On The Fly) and Interesting Eagle (Seperate Interest-Eagle On The Fly) dead-heated for fourth. Mornings With Maria (Seperate Interest-Bartiromo) finished sixth. BF Lizzierageous (Foose-BF Outrageous) and Up For Everything (Favorite Cartel-Up For It) dead-heated for seventh. Future Version was scratched.
