TQHA Classic Stakes-RG2
FAMOUS CHIEF
by Michael Compton
Multiple stakes winner Famous Chief has enjoyed a productive 2022 season for owner Debbie Grimes and trainer Jason Driver. The 4-year-
old sorrel gelding won the Sam Houston Classic
in June and following a near-miss in the Willie Hickman Memorial Stakes, Famous Chief got back in the win column with a game score in the $63,750 TQHA Classic-RG2 at Retama Park on July 29, the feature race of Texas Showdown Night.
Ridden by Ali Rivera, Famous Chief raced in fifth in the early stages of the 400-yard event. With a strong rally in the lane, Famous Chief got up just in time to post a neck victory over Ima Catboy, stopping the timer in :20.082. The final time earned Famous Chief a 96 speed index in the winning effort.
The $38,250 winner’s share of the purse boosted his bankroll to $266,477. Winner of last year’s Dash For Cash Derby-G2 at Lone Star Park, Famous Chief improved his overall record to 18-7-2-2. Bred in Texas by Clarence Scharbauer III, Famous Chief is out of the Gold Regent Thoroughbred mare Rockin Regent, a multiple stakes-placed earner of $70,000 during her racing career.
Ima Catboy (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess Goldiggers), with Francisco Giles aboard, finished a close second after dueling throughout. The 4-year- old gelding is a Texas homebred for Sunset Well Service and is trained by Jorge Valenzuela.
Graded stakes winner His Time To Deal (Dealagame-Lady Lilla), winner of the Willie Hickman Memorial Stakes in his previous start, led early under Francisco Calderon and held third for owner Pete Scarmardo and trainer John Stinebaugh.
Won Famous Dash (Giorgino-Lil Famous Dash), Revenant Dynasty (A Revenant-Kirklyns Dynasty), DM Moonpie (Moonin The Eagle-DM Bella Mia), and Shott Gun (Valiant Hero-Eye Popping) completed the order of finish. Eye Will Decide was scratched.
TQHA 550 Stakes-RG3
BIG DYNASTY
by Michael Compton
Big Dynasty hasn’t been headed in any of his outings in 2022. The 4-year-old gelding remained undefeated on the season and registered
back-to-back stakes scores with a dominating wire-to-wire victory in the $53,500 TQHA 550 Stakes-RG3 at Retama Park on July 29.
Ridden by Ali Rivera, Big Dynasty broke sharply and immediately opened a 1/2-length advantage on his rivals following the break in the 550-yard test.
In a strong drive through the lane, Big Dynasty
was never seriously challenged and cruised to the wire uncontested to score as much the best by 1 1/4-lengths over graded stakes winner Dak. The winner stopped the timer in :27.926 and earned a 94 speed index.
Owned by Ramon Calvillo Jr. and trained by Jason Driver, Big Dynasty, who annexed the Tower of the America Stakes at Retama Park in his previous start on July 2, improved his overall record to 7-4- 0-1 with his latest stakes success and the $32,100 winner’s share of the TQHA 550 Stakes purse increased his bankroll to $99,720.
Bred in Texas by Michael Partin, Big Dynasty is out of the Tres Seis mare Delightfully Tres.
Runner-up Dak (Dominyun-Fleet Elis) rallied late under jockey Luis Vivanco to secure the second place spot for owner Blue Star Racing and trainer Toby Keeton. The gray gelding was bred in Texas
by Bullard Farms. The Angel Almaguer trainee
Jess Perfect Moon (Ja Jess Perfect-Dash N To The Moon), with Victor Urieta Jr. in the irons, dueled early and faded to third for owners Cheryl Hausman and Carey Hausman, DVM.
Eye Am Tuff (Carters Cartel-Loves Easter Bunny), RC Mister G (Ja Jess Perfect-Tacarosie), Jess Seis Tres (One Famous Diamond-All the Hardways), and Running For Rain (Special Royal Corona- Working For Gold) completed the order of finish.
TQHA 250 Stakes
JESS A DASHIN ANGELA
by Michael Compton
Jess A Dashin Angela, winner of the TQHA 250 Stakes last year at Sam Houston, cut back in distance once again on July 29 and promptly revisited the winner’s circle after a determined win in this year’s $55,000 TQHA 250 Stakes on July 29 at Retama Park.
Ridden by regular rider Ricardo Garza-Cruz, Jess A Dashin Angela raced in third position early. She collared early leader VP Cold Strong Heart in the lane and defeated that stubborn foe by a neck at the finish following a spirited battle through the late stages
of the 250-yard fixture. In winning for the fourth time in her career, Jess A Dashin Angela covered the distance in :13.408, earning a 96 speed index.
A Texas homebred for Cesar Rosales, Jess A Dashin Angela improved her overall record to 17-4-6-2 for trainer Jorge Barrera and the $33,000 winner’s share of the purse swelled the bay filly’s coffers to $205,015.
Jess A Dashin Angela is out of the multiple stakes- winning Mi Angela. During her racing career, the well-traveled Mi Angela captured the 2013 Indiana Live QHRAI Derby at Horseshoe Indianapolis, the 2014 Beautiful Prairie Stakes at Hialeah Park, and that year’s Silestone Stakes at Sam Houston en route to earnings of $137,723 for Rosales.
TQHA 250 Stakes runner-up VP Cold Strong Heart (This Cartel Is Cold-Double Dashing Girl), piloted by Francisco Giles, just missed for owner Victor Villarreal and trainer Martin Rodriguez. D Cosmic Cartel (The Louisiana Cartel-Special Love Shack) and jockey Eleazar Hernandez finished third for owner Guillermo Herrera and trainer Leonel Hernandez.
Hes No Ilusion (The Louisiana Cartel-
Jess An Illusion), Knowtorious (Freighttrain B-Shescheckinumout), Corona Velvet (Coronas Leaving You-MSM Black Velvet), Mo Delirio (Desirio-Mo Anita Cartel), and Awesome Surprise (Awesome Chrome-Reckless Secrets) completed the order of finish. Blazin The Moon was scratched.
