                 TQHA Sires Cup Derby
KAS SHES EC

Second in last year’s TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG3 at Retama Park, Kas Shes EC returned to the track this year for the $110,000 TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby and this time she won. When the gate opened in the Derby, Kas Shes EC came out just a little slowly for jockey Jose Herbert. She got into gear, however, and came on at the end to nab the victory by a nose, running 400 yards in :20.021. and posting a 98 speed index. The $44,000 winner’s share of the purse boosted her earnings to $181,385.
Juan Diaz Jr. trains Kas Shes EC for owner Francisco Garza. Kas Shes EC won the 2022 La Villita Stakes, ran second in the 2021 John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge-G3, and finished third in the 2022 John Buchanan Memorial Stakes.
Garza bred Kas Shes EC in Texas from his homebred stakes-placed mare Beaukas. The mare has produced seven winners from 13 starters, including stakes winners Jumpn Beau Chick, Beaus Famous, Kas Famous, and Kas Tempting.
Shirley Flores’ homebred Just A Perfect Grace (JA Jess Perfect-BZ Amazin Grace) finished second under jockey Froylan Ramirez and for trainer Manuel Flores. Just A Perfect Grace won the Miss Sam Houston Stakes earlier this year.
Jerry Windham’s homebred Hes No Ilusion (The Louisiana Cartel-Jess An Illusion) ran third. Claudio Aguilar rode the gelding for trainer Lewis Jordan. Hes No Ilusion finished second in the 2022 Silver Eagle Stakes and Leon Bard Memorial Stakes.
Rounding out the field were Desirio B Quick (Desirio-Eye B Quick Chick), Besson PZ (Tres Seis-A Separate Knockout), Insyght (Ivory James- Eye Popping), JB Shiner Bok (Boknaai-Streakin N Dancin), Ultimo Alex (Inseperable-Cindys First CD), Im Sita (Ivory James-Joyalty), and Kick Out The Jams (Ivory James-Swinging Dash).
TQHA Sale Juvenile
EAGLE POWERS

Eagle Powers scored his first stakes victory in the $44,798 TQHA Sale Juvenile Stakes at Retama Park on July 30.
With Ali Rivera aboard, Eagle Powers raced in third in the early stages. The sorrel colt hit his best stride in the lane and with a strong late surge rallied past leader Hes No Average Bear approaching the wire and drew clear to win by a 1/2-length at the finish. Eagle Powers covered the distance in :17.998, earning a 91 speed index.
Owned by Gilbert Martinez and trained by Alvin Francis Jr., Eagle Powers is now a two-time winner from four career starts. The $15,680 winner’s share of the purse increased his earnings to $32,590.
Bred in Texas by A & D Racing, Eagle Powers is out of the Pappasito mare DF Girly Girl, who was a two- time winner and a stakes-placed earner of $20,022 for A & D Racing during her racing career. Eagle Powers was a $14,500 TQHA Yearling Sale graduate.
TQHA Sale Juvenile Stakes runner-up Hes
No Average Bear (Hes Relentless-Nice Hustle), a $12,000 TQHA Sale graduate, held second after leading most of the trip under jockey Luciano Duenez. The brown colt, who finished third in the Louisiana Downs Futurity-G2 in April, is owned by Eric Hinojosa and is trained by Joel Cantu.
Passage Of A Woman (This Cartel Is Cold- Mountain Woman), under Francisco Giles, dueled early and held third for owner Victor Villarreal and trainer Martin Rodriguez.
Apollitical Magic (Apollitical Jess-Million Dollar Kiss), This Eagle Is Good (This Is An Eagle-Bonito Cartel), Tempt To Dash (Tempting Dash-Hawks Dancing Straw), Conejo Malo (Duponte-Gray Darlin Dash), Plausibledeniability (FDD Dynasty-Miz Kay), and Victori Danz (Duponte-Miss Feet Down First) completed the order of finish. A Star Tonite was scratched.

WL VAN HALEN

WL Van Halen scored his third stakes win in the $50,130 Colors of the Alamo Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Retama Park on Aug. 20.
The gelding was the fastest qualifier from the Aug. 4 trials. In the finals,he broke second under Ali Rivera and promptly grabbed the lead. They dueled throughout the 350 yards to cross the wire a head in front in :18.341 and an 81 speed index.
Trained by Jose Espinosa, the gelding brought home the $19,049 winner’s share of the purse for owner Guerras Racing Stables, boosting his total lifetime earnings to $59,030.
Raced in Oklahoma and Texas, WL Van Halen has won five races from eight starts, including
the Colors of Houston Juvenile Futurity-G2
and GCFA Paint & Appaloosa Juvenile. He
also finished third in the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Juvenile and was a finalist in the PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-G1.
Little Sonny APHA (Little PYC-Sallye Rand QH) ran second in his trial heat and stayed true to form in the finals. Ridden by Nestor Duran, the colt is owned by Ervey Balderas and trained J. F. Mendez.
After a slow start, Op Royal Nitro APHA (CRM Livewire-Op Rebbecca) came running like a freight train and was able to get his nose in third place for owner Melissa Read. The Randy Read trainee had Froylan Ramirez in the irons.
Cowgirl Cartel APHA (Dash Master Jess QH-Camo Cowgirl), WL Meme King APHA (MHM Hotwire-Unrepentant), VP Country Smoke APHA (VP Smokey Wire-Country Danger), C R B Alyssa APHA (Memories Of Okey QH-Caleb Reed), VP Double Down Dash APHA (Dos Poruno-Gw Money Dash), WL Casanova APHA (MHM Hotwire-Quick Dashin Cowgirl) VP First Down Corona APHA (Awesome Chrome-Corona By The Ocean QH) completed the order of finish.
