ICY MORNING BREEZE
William and Mary Robertson’s Icy Morning Breeze outran her 13-1 odds to win the Nov. 9, 350-yard, $360,345 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) for state-bred juveniles at Zia Park.
Ridden by Hector Aldrete, Icy Morning Breeze broke quickly from post 3 and led at every call en route to a 1/2-length victory from Bigg Dee. The homebred Winners Version filly stopped the timer in :17.618 while recording a 96 speed index and her first stakes score. Jackie Riddle prepped Icy Morning Breeze.
Icy Morning Breeze was the fourth-fastest qualifier after her second-place finish in one of eight New Mexico Cup Futurity trials on Oct. 19. The filly’s sire, Winners Version, is a graded stakes winning son of Holland Ease.
Racing in New Mexico and California from 2008-09, Winners Version earned $399,057 from 17 outs, and his five wins included a 1 3/4-length victory as the fastest qualifier in the ‘09 Hobbs America Derby (G3) at Zia Park. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $4.8 million from seven crops, including multiple graded stakes winner Seeyalateralligator, and graded stakes win- ners Dungarees Version and Teana Fay.
Winners Version is a full brother to two stakes winners, including Grade 3 winner Texas Version. The stallion stood the 2020
season at Highpoint Performance Horses at Pilot Point, Texas.
Icy Morning Breeze is out of Icy Storm (TB), a winning daughter of the Forest Wildcat stallion Attila’s Storm. The filly’s second dam, Icy Hollywood, is a 14-year-old daughter of the Gone West stallion Gone Hollywood.
Icy Hollywood has produced four winners from four Thoroughbred starters, including Unofficial Winner, a winning full sister to Icy Storm who ran second in the 2013 C.O. “Ken” Kendrick Memorial Stakes (R) at SunRay Park. Icy Morning Breeze’s third dam, Icy Morn, won 13 stakes in three states from 1994-97. Icy Morn produced three winners from four starters, including Icy Lane, a half-sister to Icy Hollywood who won the ‘04 La Senora Handicap (R) for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park.
Icy Morning Breeze has earned $184,244 from five outs, all in New Mexico, and her two wins include a 1-length victory in a 350-yard, $9,125 maiden-special-weight dash at Ruidoso Downs on Aug. 9.
Icy Morning Breeze paid $28.20 to win and teamed with runner-up Bigg Dee for a $267.60 ($2) exacta payoff. Eagles And Dragonsran third and was followed by Midnight Train Mo, Your Easy Jess, Out N Gone, Dragon On Ice, Mr Money Baggs, Hatchi Zulu, and Affinity Eagle.
Bigg Dee is a bay son of Big Daddy
Cartel owned by Rex Wells, who purchased the gelding for $30,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Bigg Dee has won three of seven starts, including the 400-yard, $50,000 Zia Juvenile Stakes (R) at Ruidoso Downs, and the $61,259 runner-up share of the New Mexico Cup Futurity purse increased his bankroll to $93,099.
A sorrel son of the First Down Dash stallion Zulu Dragon, Eagles and Dragons was the fourth-fastest overall qualifier to the September 7, $3-million All American Futurity (G1). Eagles and Dragons has won three of six races and has earned $109,634 for his owner, Joe Rios.
