 Heritage Place Juvenile
WHISTLE STOP CAFE
by Danny Camp
Whistle Stop Cafe took home the biggest slice of pie in the $100,000 Heritage Place Juvenile at Remington Park on May 30.
The filly won herfirst start in the May 8 trials and came into the Juvenile with the third fastest time.
In the finals, Whistle Stop Cafe broke from the 2-post awith the pack. She fell behind a bit, but secured the lead at the
top of the stretch, crossing
the wire first by a nose. The
filly and rider Ricky Ramirez
completed the 350 yards in
:17.616 to earn an 87 speed
index. The $26,880 first place
money boosted her earnings to
$35,710. Owned by Whitmire
Ranch and trained by Blane
Wood, Whistle Stop Café is
undefeated from two starts.
“This is a nice filly,” said Ramirez. “She didn’t run a very good trial race
and I thought she would improve after that. Fifty yards from the wire, I thought I was a winner but at the wire I didn’t know. She is gentle and wants to please, and puts out the effort if you ask her. I think she is talented enough to improve leaps and bounds.”
When asked about her future, Ramirez said, “She is a kind filly and good to handle
and be around. We will haul her to Ruidoso and see what we can get done there.”
Bobby Cox bred Whistle Stop Cafe out of winner Sinuous, who ran second in the Dash For Cash Derby-G2 and third in the Heritage Place Derby-G1. She has pro- duced 100% money earners from 12 starters, including top earner So Rapido, who won the Sam Houston Derby-G3 and was a finalist in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1.
Diane To Be A Hero (Valiant Hero-Diane To Paint) was just barely nodded out at the wire under James Flores for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr. and trainer Ramon Mendoza. The gelding won his May 8 trial heat by a neck.
Apollitical Bird (Apollitical Blood-Painted Laico Bird) finished in third under Justine Klaiber for owners Melany and Ron Shalz. Conditioned by Eddie Willis, the filly finished second in the May 8 trial to the Heritage Place Futurity to qualify to the Futurity.
B Boujee (Tres Seis-Glory Rider), DF Fabulous Jet (One Fabulous Eagle-Coco Corona), Charlenas Relentless (Hes Relentless- Jess Charlena), Jmonecoronadobarbie (Corona Cartel-Little Kool Barbie), Tres Evidence (Tres Seis-Kpax) and EC Ante Up (Apollitical Jess- Fast Prize Zoom) completed the order of finish. Jessa Bit Of Candy was scratched.
