MISTER TORNADO
by Tracy Gantz
Mister Tornado may have spent much of his rac- ing career in the claiming ranks, but he tries no matter what class of competition he tackles. He
proved how much heart he has when he nosed out favored Zoom On Jess in the $37,961 Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge on May 24.
With Jonathan Roman aboard, Mister Tornado came away in fourth when the gate opened in the 400-yard Derby Challenge, despite being bumped at the start. Mister Tornado closed relentlessly to grab the victory right at the wire. He completed 400 yards in :19.925, posting an 89 speed index.
Trained by Felix Gonzalez, Mister Tornado collected the $17,842 winner’s share of the purse for owner Fernando Flores, which boosted his total lifetime earnings to $61,155. Mister Tornado won four consecutive claiming races from last October through February.
Salvador Flores bred Mister Tornado out of winner Spanish Sola Mark. She has produced two starters, both winners.
Gary and Jeralyn Messenger’s homebred Zoom On Jess (Jess Zoomin-Feature Miss Fame) ran second under jockey Armando Cervantes for trainer Monty Arrossa. The gelding won the 2019 Idaho Cup Futurity and The Plan Handicap.
Reliance Ranches LLC’s homebred Giving Freely (Corona Cartel-Fate Cant Weight), winner of last year’s John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge, finished third. Oscar Peinado rode the filly for trainer Mike Robbins in the Derby Challenge.
Completing the field were Spring Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Spring Bling), CM Singing The Blues (Inseperable-Cool Blue Corona), Pay Me In Front (FDD Dynasty-Bac In Front), Dance Dakota Dance (Favorite Cartel-Joyful Separation), Newport Guy (Kiddy Up-Wave Babe) and Back Home Again (Favorite Cartel-Bring Me Home).
Dillingham Handicap
JOHN CARTER CASH
by Tracy Gantz
John Carter Cash had been getting close at Los Alamitos, and he grabbed his first victory at
the California track in the $25,000 Dillingham Handicap on May 16. It was only his second start for trainer Valentin Zamudio.
The 4-1 fourth choice, John Carter Cash blasted out of the gate on top for jockey Jose Nicasio. The gelding easily held off the field to score by 1-length in :19.677 for 400 yards.
Zamudio trains John Carter Cash for owner Juan Ramos Dorantes. John Carter Cash began his career in Washington. He won the 2019 Pot O’ Gold Futurity at Sun Downs.
Ronald Raley bred John Carter Cash in Oregon from his homebred One Fast Trick, winner of
the 2004 Far West Futurity-RG3, 2004 Withnell Dodge Firecracker Futurity, and 2005 Portland Meadows Fall Derby. The mare has produced three winners in five starters, including stakes winner Thinkin Of Girls and stakes-placed Jesses Claim Ta Fame.
Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred Close To It (Favorite Cartel-Without Fault) finished second with Erasmo Gasca aboard. Jimmy Glenn Jr. trains the gelding, who won three of four races last year.
Allred also bred third-place Up And Coming (Kiddy Up-Hits Keep Coming), owned by La
Feliz Montana Ranch LLC and MRB Racing LLC. Eduardo Nicasio rode the gelding for trainer Christopher O’Dell. Up And Coming captured the 2020 James S. Smith Memorial Handicap.
