John Andreini Memorial
NEW NEWS
by Tracy Gantz
Not only did Janell Sanderson win the very first race of her training career, she did it in a stakes race. Sanderson trains New News, winner of the
$40,000 John Andreini Memorial Stakes at Ruidoso Downs on May 25.
New News broke on top under jockey Jaime Leos. The 4-year-old gelding lost the lead briefly and then battled back to score by a 1/2-length in :17.579 for 350 yards. It was his first start for Sanderson, who trains New News for owners Cesar Sanchez and Nathaneal Pallanes.
For other conditioners and owners, New News won the 2019 West Texas Derby-G3 and finished second in the 2019 Mr Jet Moore Handicap. He began racing for Sanchez and Pallanes this year, and he captured the March 1 Rio Grande Handicap at Sunland Park.
Bennie and Terri Jeter bred New News out of winner Executive Promises. New News is the mare’s first winner from three starters.

DR TOOL
by Tracy Gantz
Luis Gonzalez bought Texas-bred Dr Tool in Oklahoma and started the gelding’s racing career in New Mexico. But it’s in Utah that Dr Tool is
flourishing. He is two for two at Weber Downs, winning his trial as the fastest qualifier and the final of the $50,771 Adequan Weber Downs Derby Challenge on May 24.
Dr Tool broke out of the gate on top under jockey Jesus Valenzuela, dominating throughout the 400 yards and extending his lead throughout. He ultimately won by 1 1/2 lengths in :19.953, posting a 105 speed index.
Andy Caulo bred Dr Tool out of One Famous Eagle mare Where Eagles Soar, a half-sister to stakes winners Sixy Royal King and Sixy Shazoom. The mare has produced 100% money earners from three starters.
Southwest Stallion Station consigned the youngster to the 2018 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Gonzalez purchased him at the sale for $18,000.
Eric Ayala rode Calida (FDD Dynasty-The Fire Fly) to second for owner Lex Fabrizio and trainer Monty Arrossa. Calida won last year’s Roche Equine Futurity. LOCO OCHO
by Danny Camp
Loco Ocho scored her first stakes victory in the $27,676 Weber Downs Distaff Challenge, which was held on May 24.
The filly stepped away from the 4-post on the lead, but jockey Jesus Valenzuela realized they were very close to the others and started to ride hard. At the midway point, the pair was a head in front of the field, and they had a neck margin at the top of the stretch. With determined grit, they pulled away in a wire-to- wire performance, finishing on top by 3/4-length.
Trained by Garth Blattner, they completed the 400 yards in :19.956, posting a 105 speed index.
Loco Ocho scored the $13,008 winner’s share of the purse for owners/breeders Les & Darla Barlow, boosting her total lifetime earnings to $28,366.
The filly now has a race record of 12-6(1)-2(0)- 1(1). She finished third in the 2019 Pocatello Downs Distaff Challenge.
The Barlow’s bred Loco Ocho out of Idaho Cup Derby and Dale Schvaneveldt Derby winner Sign Of Pride. She has produced 100% winners from seven starters, including top earner Sparklin Cartel, who won the Sandy Downs Distaff Challenge. Loco Ocho is her third stakes winner.
Shesa Dashair (Dashair-Shesaspeedin Bullet) showed a late rally to pocket second place money for owner Ricardo Mariles and trainer Ricardo Mariles- Santos. Jose Lopez was in the saddle. Three-time stakes winner Favorite Bling (Favorite Cartel-Spring Bling) and jockey Jesus Canales finished third
for owner Juan Morales Garcia and trainer Jose Rosales Gomez. Followed by Secret Noble (No Secrets Here-Time For Noble), Look Secret (We Have A Secret-Righteous Look), Royallittlewagon (Paintyourownwagon-Royal Lil Strike), Vino Bello (Favorite Cartel-Napa Valley Girl), She Zooms (Jess Zoomin-She Surfs) and Candalaria (Running Pete- Blue Dido).
