A few years ago, Kaye Jones decided to stop foaling horses at her and husband Dan’s place in Kemp, Texas. She picked a good baby to stop with: Live Moonshine, a 2-Time World Champion Paint, first in 2018 and again in 2020.
“He was born in the worst storm,” Kaye recalled. “I thought I was going to have to call a vet because he was such a big baby.”
But all was well, and the colt came out as a beautiful foal.
“He had a mane that stood up about three inches,” Kaye said. “And on the top of it was just curls. So I called him Curly, his barn name. He was full of personality.”
Live Moonshine is by the Joneses’ CRM Livewire, a World Champion himself and the
#5 all-time leading Paint sire. They also own Southern Electric and Bully Pulpit, two other sons of CRM Livewire. Southern Electric was named the 2020 Champion 3-Year-Old Solid Paint-Bred Champion and Champion Gelding, and Bully Pulpit received the 2020 Paint Distance Championship title. The Joneses bred Live Moonshine in Texas out of their homebred Paint mare PRP Sedona Sunset.
Matt Whitekiller trains Live Moonshine, Southern Electric, and Bully Pulpit. He also trained CRM Livewire and PRP Sedona Sunset. Cody Smith rode both the sire and dam, and he piloted Live Moonshine for most of the 2020 season.
Live Moonshine began the 2020 season at Remington Park, where he won the Paul Harber Stakes and Cowboy & Western Heritage Stakes-G1.
At Fair Meadows, Live Moonshine added
the Lewis Wartchow Memorial Stakes-G1. He completed the season at Will Rogers in two allowance events, facing Southern Electric in the second one.
Southern Electric went off the slight favorite over his older stablemate. But experience paid off, and Live Moonshine defeated Southern Electric by a half-length.
The Joneses plan to run Live Moonshine at Remington Park in 2021 and then will decide whether to continue racing him or point him toward another career. Kaye would like to see him go on
to barrel racing to showcase the abilities of CRM Livewire as a sire even further.
