Breeders: Steve Wright & Dee Keener; Owner: Painted Faith Racing
2020 Record: 11-4(2)-3-1(1), $106,220, PSBA F.-G1, Lone Star P&A F., 3rd Okla. P&A F.-G1, 4th Speedhorse P&A F.-G1, Pot O’ Gold F.-G1
When a horse’s barn name is Moose,
rest assured he is a big boy. Moose
is officially known as WF Turnpike Candy, the 2020 World Champion Solid Paint-Bred Running Horse.
“He’s really pretty gentle,” said Wendy Ingersoll Keener, one of WF Turnpike Candy’s owners.
Wendy is married to noted Paint and Quarter Horse trainer Dee Keener, who with Steve Wright bred WF Turnpike Candy in Oklahoma in 2018.
Wendy, Steve, and Steve’s wife, Lorie, make up Painted Faith Racing, which owns WF Turnpike Candy. Dee trains the gelding. Together, they guided Moose to his World Championship title.
WF Turnpike Candy has the bloodlines to be
a World Champion. His sire, Painted Turnpike,
was a 3-Time Paint World Champion and in 2015 became the first horse to win the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown. SW Eye Candy, WF Turnpike Candy’s dam, was named the Paint Champion Running 3-Year-Old Filly in 2012. Steve and Dee still own the mare.
“We really thought a lot of him from the start,” said Wendy of WF Turnpike Candy. “It looked like he had a ton of talent.”
Dee started WF Turnpike Candy at Remington Park in the trials for the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
“He won his trial pretty handily,” said Wendy.
Third in the final in what the chart termed a “hard-fought loss,” WF Turnpike Candy next quali- fied the fastest for the PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-G1. In winning that race by a 1/2-length, he gave Dee his fifth victory in the race,.
As the circuit moved to Fair Meadows and Will Rogers Downs through the summer, WF Turnpike Candy failed to win, though he ran second twice.
“He went through a period where he was kind of off his feed,” said Wendy. “Then he went through a growing spurt. By the time the race came around at Lone Star, he was getting his legs back under him.”
Second in the trial, WF Turnpike Candy won the final of the Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. It was particularly poignant for Wendy, whose father passed away two days before the final.
The win raised WF Turnpike Candy’s bankroll to $106,220 and earned him the World Chmpionship.
