Owner Samuel Gaytan and trainer Oscar Nunez made an excellent claim at Lone Star Park last Oct. 31. They took 3-year-
old Appaloosa gelding Jess Cruzin for $7,500 and ran him back in the Nov. 15 Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Claiming Derby. When Jess Cruzin won that race, he earned $14,307 for his new connections as well as the 2020 Appaloosa Horse of the Year title.
Jess Cruzin had finished second by a neck to the Paint Invisable Paint Brush when Gaytan and Nunez claimed him. Those two rivals met again in the Claiming Derby, and Jess Cruzin exacted revenge.
With Froylan Ramirez in the irons, Jess Cruzin broke behind most of the field, but he made up for it during the 350 yards. Though Invisable Paint Brush forged to the front early, Jess Cruzin powered home strongly late in the race. He grabbed the lead and defeated Invisable Paint Brush by 3/4-length in :18.241.
Prior to the claim, Jess Cruzin raced for Jeff Adams, who bred him in Oklahoma. Jess Cruzin did not break his maiden in three starts at two in 2019, but he finished second in a maiden event at Remington Park. In his 2020 season at Remington, he started five times, putting together back-to-back wins on April 19 and May 2.
At Fair Meadows, Jess Cruzin competed in two allowance races, finishing third once. He also ran third in a claiming race at Will Rogers Downs. Jess Cruzin ended the year with a record of three wins, three seconds, and two thirds in 13 starts.
Adams has done very well with Jess Cruzin’s fam- ily. He got Jess Cruzin by breeding his outstanding Appaloosa mare Jess Streakin to the Quarter Horse stallion Hes Relentless. Jess Streakin, by Quarter Horse stallion Feature Mr Jess, was a stakes winner and earner of $57,343.
Jess Streakin also produced D Railed, the 2019 Appaloosa Horse of the Year. A son of the Quarter Horse stallion Freighttrain B, D Railed continued
to race in 2020, winning three races and bringing
his total earnings to $94,618. The mare’s other foals include Jess Cuz, a full sister to D Railed who won the 2018 Colors of the Wind Stakes and earned $83,422.
Perfect Intention, the second dam of Jess Cruzin, produced the Appaloosa Hall of Fame racehorse You R My Sunshine, a daughter of Quarter Horse stallion Corona Cartel. You R My Sunshine earned $159,171.
