“When that horse was scratched and (my horse) was reloaded in the gates the second time, he was much calmer,” Ramirez added.
Doc McCrocklin posted the third-fastest qualifying time off of his wire-to-wire, half- length victory in the fifth of 11 TQHA Sale Futurity trials on July 9.
A $12,500 purchase at last year’s TQHA Yearling Sale, the gelding was bred by Bullard Farms of Weatherford, Texas.
Doc McCrocklin is out of Pink Cartel, a homebred 12-year-old daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Jet Cartel. Racing from 2011- 12, Pink Cartel won the 2011 Dash For Cash Juvenile Invitational Stakes at Lone Star Park and was a finalist in the TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby-RG3 during her sophomore season.
Doc McCrocklin’s half-brother, the Country Chicks Man gelding Ten Sent,
won the $53,500 TQHA 550 Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park on July 30. The gelding’s winning half-sister, Tempting Pink, was a finalist in the 2018 Sam Houston Derby-G3.
Doc McCrocklin’s second dam, the win- ning Fight Over TB mare Shades Of Pink, foaled Fire On The Fly, a full brother to Pink Cartel who won six 870-yard stakes from 2014-2016, including the 2014 AQHA Sunland Distance Challenge-G3 and 2016 AQHA Remington Distance Challenge-G3. Shades Of Pink also produced Shady Caller, a half-sister to Pink Cartel who foaled three-time 870 stakes winner Call Her Hero.
Doc McCrocklin traces back to his fourth dam, Get Swinging TB, a stakes-winning Get Around mare, who ran third in the
1977 Margate Handicap-G3 at Atlantic City Racecourse in New Jersey.
Campaigned in two states, including Louisiana, Doc McCrocklin has won four
of five races and has banked $220,410. The gelding began his career with a head victory in
one of nine 300-yard Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity-G3 trials at Louisiana Downs.
His win in the TQHA Sale Futurity
extended his win streak to three, a streak that includes a 1-length victory in a 350-yard $24,000 first-level allowance dash at Sam Houston Race Park on June 11.
Fastest qualifier and 4-5 favorite Hock It To You (Kiss My Hocks-Lil Famous Dash) fin- ished second, a neck behind Doc McCrockin, and earned $95,900 for owners Reynold Munoz and Heavy Hitters Racing Stables. The sorrel colt and $35,000 yearling purchase has earned $389,262 from six outs in Texas and Oklahoma. Ricky Ramirez rode Hock It To You for trainer Juan Diaz Jr.
Pete A. Scarmardo’s Jess The Leader (Jess Louisiana Blue-Cartel Leader) ran third to run his bankroll to $47,950 from three starts. Jose
Vega rode the homebred bay gelding for trainer John Stinebaugh.
Call Chrome (Moonin The Eagle-The California Girl), Ivory Royale (Ivory James- Rhia La Jolla), Revenant Dynasty (A Revenant- Kirklyns Dynasty), Fire In Her Eyez (PYC Prize Time-This Fire Is Cold), and Hockability (Kiss My Hocks-Jakes Painted Wagon) com- pleted the order of finish. There was one other scratch in addition to Lethal Fast Cash, as ninth-fastest qualifier Special Lil Cricket was listed by the Equibase chart as a trainer scratch.
Contested annually since 1999, the TQHA Sale Futurity is restricted to two year olds who passed through the sale ring at the previous year’s TQHA Yearling Sale. Past winners include World Champion Oak Tree Special (2002). Azoom holds the 350-yard stakes record of :17.40, established in 2004.
