Golden State Derby-G1
AINT SHE TEMPTING
by Tracy Gantz
Fillies took the top four spots in the Aug. 15 Golden State Derby-G1, with Aint She Tempting getting home on top for her first
stakes victory at Los Alamitos.
Winner of the 2020 Oklahoma Futurity-G2,
Aint She Tempting ran second in the 2020 Heritage Place Futurity-G1 and Golden State Million Futurity-G1. This year she finished sec- ond in the Los Alamitos Oaks-G3. That record made her the 9-10 favorite
in the Golden State Derby. Breaking from the outside under jockey Jose Nicasio, Aint She Tempting got bumped and then vied for the lead. College Scandal on the rail had the narrow advantage, but late in the 400 yards, Aint She Tempting burst forth to score by a head in :19.922.
“It was a suspenseful race for me because for a moment I thought that maybe the
inside horse had beaten us,” said Nicasio. “It was close the entire way, but I think we secured the win in the final three jumps.”
Monty Arrossa trains Aint She Tempting
for Julianna Hawn Holt. Lazy E Ranch con- signed Aint She Tempting to the 2019 Heritage Place Yearling Sale for breeder McColee Land & Livestock LLC, and Brian Levings purchased her for $21,500. Levings Racing began racing Aint
She Tempting, and Holt has owned her since late last year. McColee bred the filly
in Utah from the Corona Cartel mare Preslee The First, the dam of 4 winners from
7 starters. The second dam, First Carolina, won the 2006 Heritage Place Futurity-G1 and 2007 Remington Park Derby-G2, and she has pro- duced stakes winners Ms First Prize Rose, Coronado Cartel, and Denver Pass.
Reason To Fly MV (Good Reason SA-Take A Look), bred and owned by Paulo Otavio Freire Macedo, finished second for jockey Cruz Mendez and trainer Jose Flores. The filly ran second in the 2020 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity-G2.
Gentry Farms’ homebred College Scandal (Coronas Leaving You-Fovee) ran third. Ramon Sanchez piloted the filly for trainer Juan Aleman. College Scandal won three of her 14 prior starts.
Followed by Diva On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Jess Sass Me), Rox Win (Seperate Interest- Mindys Favorite), Unstoppable One (Hes Relentless-Time To Splash Bac), That’s R Best Card (Docs Best Card-Thatsa Blazin Chick), EG Domingo (Hawkinson-City Image), and Dreamland Express (Zulu Dragon-Answer The Dream). Watch Over Bella was scratched.

Spencer L. Childers California Bred Championship H.-RG1
CIRCLE CITY
by Tracy Gantz
Dr. Ed Allred not only owns and bred Circle City and Nomadic, the one-two finishers in the $100,000 Spencer L. Childers California
Breeders Championship Handicap-RG1 at Los Alamitos on July 31, the two are stakes- winning full brothers. Add to that a third place by Allred-owned multiple stakes winner Chocolatito with Scott Willoughby the trainer of all three, and it was an incredible sweep.
It meant even more because the late Spencer Childers was a good friend of
Allred’s.
“Spencer Childers was my guru in many aspects in life and in this industry,” said Allred. “He was the most eth- ical and correct (person) that I’ve ever known. Winning this race is very meaningful for me.”
Circle City, by virtue of coming off of a win in the recent Vessels Maturity-G1, went off as the 3-2 favorite,
with Chocolatito the second choice and Nomadic the third choice. Breaking second from the rail under jockey Jesus Ayala, Circle City “begins alertly from the inside,” said track announcer Michael Wrona, and that was pretty much the race, as he led “from go to whoa,” as Wrona put it. Circle City won by 3/4-length in :19.652 for 400 yards.
“We gave him time off, and it really helped him,” said Willoughby. “It got his mind back
on his business.”
Circle City also won
the 2020 Golden State Derby-G2, finished second
in the 2019 Golden State Million Futurity-G1, and ran third in the 2021 Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3.
Allred bred Circle City in California from two-time stakes winner Moonlight Corona, a half-sister to Champion Your First Moon and Grade 1 winner Not A
Full Moon. The mare has produced 19 win- ners from 22 starters, including Nomadic and stakes-placed Stroller.
Nomadic (Favorite Cartel-Moonlight Corona), ridden by Henry Lopez, earned sec- ond by a 1/2-length. He was making his first start of 2021, having won the 2020 Southern California Derby-G2 and Governor’s Cup Derby-RG2. At two in 2019 he captured the Ed Burke Juvenile Stakes.
Chocolatito (Favorite Cartel-Enjoy The Walk), who was scratched out of this race last year, finished third by a nose. Victor Salazar rode the gelding, a four-time stakes winner. Completing the field were Mental Error (Favorite Cartel-Iba Quick Chick), Mister Tornado (Sports Cartel-Spanish Sola Mark), Made Over (Favorite Cartel-Make Over) and Cartel Love (Favorite Cartel-All About Love).
