North Star State Futurity
RELENTLESS COURAGE
by John Moorhouse
Relentless Courage racked up his third straight win and his second consecutive stakes victory with a 1/2-length triumph in the $28,000 North
Star State Futurity, held Aug. 10 at Canterbury Park. The gelding entered this race as the strong
post-time favorite at nearly even-money odds after winning the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity in his most recent prior start. He broke on top from the 4-post in this one and dueled with stablemate Relentless Babe most of the way before gaining some distance and hitting the wire first.
Luis Valenzuela was aboard for the victorious 300-yard trip, completed in :15.756 for an 89 speed index while running through a 17 mph headwind.
Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann own Relentless Courage, a two-year-old sorrel gelding who finished fourth in his maiden out at Remington Park and
has been to the winner’s circle in every subsequent start. Jason Olmstead trains Relentless Courage; he also prepped the winner of the Skip Zimmerman Memorial Stakes on this same card. The victory produced a $14,000 payday, pushing Relentless Courage’s total earnings to $54,573.
Harold M. Jeanotte bred Relentless Courage out of Newport Lily, a lightly raced 2005 mare.
Relentless Babe (Hes Relentless-Mai Corona), who is owned by Maher and trained by Olmstead, finished second by three-quarters after going off at 2-1 odds. The filly also placed third to Relentless Courage in July’s MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity. Edwin Escobedo did the riding. JLS Full Moon (Moonin The Eagle-Effortlessly Strut), a 13-1 longshot, hit the board in third place. Jerry Oxner is the owner and Randall Weidner is the trainer. David Pinon was aboard.
Tomi Guns (BP Phoenix Reign-Bee Bee Guns), PR Little Miss Guns (BP Phoenix Reign-Garters N Guns), and Makin Drama (Capo De Capi-Avoid The Drama) completed the field.
Skip Zimmerman Memorial
JUICE IS LOOSE
by John Moorehouse
Juice Is Loose squeezed out his first-ever stakes victory, winning the $28,500 Skip Zimmerman Memorial Stakes on Aug. 10 at Canterbury Park. After finishing second in the Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge-G3
in July, Juice Is Loose was tabbed as the post-time favorite in this one, going off at 9-5 odds. Drawing the inside starting gate, the colt drifted in, then surged to the front. He led by a 1/2-length at the first call, extended his advantage to 1 1/2-lengths going into the stretch, then held on to win by a 1/2-length margin. Jason Olmstead trains Juice Is Loose, who cov- ered the 350 yards in :17.662 and posted a 98 speed index despite running into a 16 mph headwind. Edwin Escobedo had the riding assignment.
Tom Maher and Stephen Williams own Juice Is Loose, a four-year-old colt who notched his second win of the year and his fourth overall victory in
19 starts. The $14,250 prize from this stakes race elevated his total earnings to $115,405.
Sam W. Green bred Juice Is Loose out of Miss Southern DD, a 2011 mare who also has black type, winning the 2015 version of the Tallahassee Stakes at Hialeah Park. Foaled in Oklahoma, Juice Is Loose was by World Champion sire One Famous Eagle.
Heza Blues Man (Favorite Cartel-Eyesa Blues Girl) finished second for owner Chelsey Badura and trainer Ed Hardy. Salvador Martinez was in the irons. Glenn Graff owns Justafamilytradition (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess An Illusion), who placed third despite being the biggest underdog in the field at almost 32-1 odds. Randall Weidner is the trainer and Ramiro Garcia did the riding.
Dream Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Dream Ride), A Valiant Diamond (One Valiant Hero-Sixy Chamisa), HR Storm On In (Red Storm Cat-Scentsy), and Zoomn On Bye (Mezoomn-Eyesa Chickin It Out) completed the field.

by Jess Johnson
It was the fillies, led by Rate Me A Lady, who domi- nated the fifth running of the $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile at Canterbury Park on Aug. 11
in Shakopee, Minnesota.
Trained by Jason Olmstead and ridden to victory
by Luis Valenzula, Rate Me A Lady went off at 14 to 1 for owner/breeder Jo Rice.
Breaking from the middle of the field, Rate Me A Lady was second at the start from the 5-gate and quickly dominated at all remaining calls throughout the 350 yard race, finishing in :18.185 with a speed index of 83. A first time stakes performer, Rate Me A Lady, broke her maiden and added $12,000 to her lifetime earnings.
Rate Me A Lady is sired by High Rate of Return and out of Jo Rice’s homebred mare, This Lady Zooms by Shazoom. Rate Me A Lady is her first stakes winner from only two to go to the track.
In a last leap effort with Edwin Escobedo in
the irons, the bettors’ favorite, Chloes Magic (Hes Relentless-BBS PYC Luckycharm), also trained by Jason Olmstead, placed second for owner/breeder Lunderborg LLC. She put forth an impressive effort finishing 1/2-length behind the winner after break- ing eighth at the start. The 2-time stakes performer ran 4th in the MQHRA Stallion Futurity.
A first time stakes performer, Kickin Good Time (Jess Good Candy-Kickin Escalation), was edged out at the wire in a photo finish, placing third for owner George Seward. Trained by Robert Don Johnson, Stormy Smith was called for the ride.
