A total of 30 trials were run over a two-day period at Ruidoso Downs to determine the 10 fastest qualifiers to the $3 million All American Futurity-G1 to be contested on Labor Day September 6, which is closing day of the Ruidoso Downs’ summer meet.
August 20, day 1 of the trials, had nice weather with a fast track. The day began with an 11-mph head wind, gusting up to 16 mph throughout the day. Three geldings & two fillies qualified to the finals on Friday from the 9th, 11th, 12th & 15th trials. Two came from
the 9-hole and one each from the 3-, 5-, & 10-holes. The first day of trials also saw 3 homebreds make it to the finals in Sippin Hayden
for breeder/owner Rafter W Stables, Kat Eye Kylie for breeder/owner Papas Place LLC, and KJ Desparado for breeder/co-owners John and Kathy Lee’s L&L Land & Cattle. Sire Apollitical Jess had 2 qualifiers this day in KJ Desparado & Jess Dream Of Me. Favorite Cartel also saw 2 qualifiers in Kat Eye Kylie & Favorite Blues Man. All 5 quali-
fiers were trained by different trainers and ridden by different jockeys. August 21, day 2 of the trials, saw similar temperatures as day
1, but the day began with a 13-mph tail wind that turned to a light
cross wind by the 10th heat. Four geldings and one filly qualified this day, coming from the 1st, 3rd and 5th trials. Three homebreds made it to the finals in FDD Scout (Paragon Farms LLC), El Painted Eagle (Jose Luis Ozuna) and Jess Dealin (Pete A. Scarmardo). John Stinebaugh trained 2 qualifiers this day in fastest qualifier Jess Savin Candy and 5th fastest Jess Dealin, and jockey Francisco Calderon qualified both of them.
When we look at the 10 horses going to the All American Futurity from both days of trials combined, we see that no breed- ers nor owners had more than one qualifier. John Stinebaugh is the only trainer to qualify more than one horse while jockey Francisco Calderon qualified three.
