ONE MARK
Fincher Racing LLC’s One Mark, a son of Marking trained by Todd Fincher, led at every call en route to a convincing 8 1/4-length victory in the Sept. 4, 1-mile Casino at The Downs Derby (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old Thoroughbreds at Albuquerque Downs.
Ridden by Rodolfo Guerra and racing on a sloppy and sealed track, One Mark covered his 8-furlong trip in 1:38.96. The bay gelding earned $60,000 from his first career stakes win.
One Mark was bred by Cleber J. Massey, and he is one of 12 winners from 25 starters sired by Marking, a nine-year-old winning and Grade 1-placed son of the A.P. Indy stallion Bernardini and the Grade 1-winning Street Cry (IRE) mare Seventh Street. Campaigned on two continents from 2015-2016, Marking earned $426,200 from eight races, and his record included a second-place finish in Runhappy’s 2015 Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
Marking is a half-brother to Lake Avenue,
the winner of the 2019 Demoiselle Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct Racetrack. The stallion has sired four official black-type stakes winners and the earners of more than $724,000 from two crops, including multiple stakes winner Slammed.
Marking is owned by Fred Alexander and Todd Fincher. He stands for a $3,500 fee at Fred
and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico
One Mark is also one of two winners from four starters foaled by Cherry One, a home-
bred daughter of the Cherokee Run stallion Sir Cherokee who won the 2009 El Paso Times Handicap at Sunland Park. The gelding’s second dam, the El Gran Senor mare One Accord, won three stakes in Maryland from 1996-1997. A Kentucky-bred foal, One Accord produced nine winners from 10 starters, including More Accord, a stakes-winning half-sister to Cherry One.
One Mark traces back to his third dam, Mr. T.’s Tune, who won six stakes from 1984-1986, foaled 100% winners from 11 starters, and was a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Contrefaire.
One Mark was coming off of a Ruidoso Downs summer campaign during which he won both of his starts. All told, the gelding has won three of eight races, and the winner’s share of the Casino at The Downs Derby purse boosted his bankroll to $119,538.
One Mark’s two-year-old record included a second-place finish in the 5-furlong, $163,000 Mountain Top Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred juveniles at Ruidoso Downs.
Cheese Tray finished in second place and was followed by Dan Who, Izeright, Sarge, Delbert
Too, and Ilikerollin.
Cheese Tray earned the $20,000 runner-up
share of the purse for owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, who also bred the bay Attila’s Storm colt. Cheese Tray has won two of 10 races and has banked $78,136, and his season record includes a third-place finish in the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Road Runner Stakes (R) at Ruidoso Downs on August 1.
Dan Who races for Juan Carlos Gutierrez, who claimed the bay Abstraction gelding for $6,250 at Albuquerque Downs on August 18. Dan Who has won one of 11 outs, and the $10,000 third-place share of the Casino at The Downs Derby purse bumped his earnings to $23,117.
