CARTELS SPECIAL GIRL
by Michael Cusortelli
Owned by Valerie Shoun, Cartels Special Girl made her career debut with a wire-to-wire vic- tory in the $15,000 South Dakota Bred Futurity at
Fort Pierre on May 6.
Ridden by jockey Francisco Estrada for trainer
Tom Moody, Cartels Special Girl flew from the six-hole at the break. The sorrel filly was out on the lead and had a full length margin by the top of the stretch.
Cartels Special Girl continued pulling away from the field, winning her first official race in stakes company.
Cartels Special Girl covered the 250 yard contest in :13.741 for an 84 speed index.
Her margin of victory was 1 3/4-lengths over Specialcowboycorona. Cartels Special Girl earned the $7,200 winner’s share of the purse.
Cartels Special Girl was bred by Rodney Ruzsa and is the first starter produced by two-time winner Wanna Be Special.
The mare, who earned $24,682 in her racing career, was bred by Weetona Stanley of Madill, Oklahoma, who on June 1 will be inducted into the Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
Cartels Special Girl’s second dam is Wanna Be Me, who was second in the 1998 Miss Blackhawk Stakes at Prairie Meadows. Wanna Be Me has produced 2012 Remington Park Juvenile Stakes winner PYC Kant Katch Me and four stakes- placed runners, including CR Sugar N Spice,
who ran third in the 2009 Remington Park Futurity-G1.
No trials were contested for the South Dakota Bred Futurity, and all of the two year olds in this race were making their debuts in the event.
Coming in second place was Specialcowboycorona (Cowboys Cartel- Hawktomistic). Jake Olesiak rode the sorrel colt for owners Gary Johnson and Bob Johnson, who also trains the homebred colt.
Whataflynn Rider (Whatafly Special-Lil Miss Alexandra) finished third, a nose behind Specialcowboycorona. Jeramie Fennell rode the homebred brown colt for Warren N. Golliher and trainer Bob Johnson.

by Michael Compton
Beach Mercedes scored the first stakes victory of her career, proving best in the $90,100 Harley Green Derby at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino on June 2. With Jose Beltran aboard, Beach Mercedes broke
on top sharply from the 9-gate and battled for the lead. They held a closing Kitty Sixup at bay to pre- vail by a neck at the finish. Beach Mercedes covered the 350 yards in :17.774, earning a 91 speed index.
The filly brought home the $49,555 winner’s share of the purse for owner/breeder Sheri Miller and trainer Randy Smith, boosting her total lifetime earnings to $79,195.
Miller bred Beach Mercedes out of Jess Alive Bully, winner of the 2005 Jaguar Rocket Stakes at Indiana Grand. She also finished third in the fol- lowing year’s Blue River Derby. Jess Alive Bully has produced 100% money earners from five starters, including top money earner Beach Birde. The 2017 Central High-Point Aged Mare ran second in the 2016 Hoosier Park Classic at Indiana Grand. Beach Mercedes is Jess Alive Bully’s first stakes winner.

Sixes Loaded To Fly (Sixes Liaison-Loaded To Fly) finished third under Cesar Esqueda for owner Duke Racing LLC and trainer Anthony Cunningham.
DNA Dalesblackbueaty (Brookstone Bay- Chrystal Dale) was fourth. MPT Visions Of
Mars (Real Visions-Diamatary) and Beach Treat (Escondido Beach-Treat Me to Cash) finished in a dead heat for fifth and were followed by LF Curly (One Famous Versace-Eye Opening Favorite), DNA Bells Bay (Brookstone Bay-Floyds Chrystal Bell), Eyem Sixes (Sixes Liaison-Eyem Yur Huckleberry) and BV Running Bear (First Corona Home-BV Why Not Me).
Born Runner Classic
WH DESIGN BY DASH
by John Moorehouse
WH Design By Dash snared his 4th stakes win and his 3rd in the Born Runner Classic at Indiana Grand on May 26, making a late surge to finish first by 3/4-length. The gelding has now won 3 of the past 4 runnings of this event. He also broke his own stakes record, finishing the 400 yards in :19.666 in the $84,800 race, surpassing the :19.713 record he set in last year’s event. Owned by Julia Rae Martin and trained by her husband, Paul Martin, WH Design By Dash now holds 12 wins in 39 starts. The $46,640 payday increased his bankroll to $372,801, making him one of the top 5 all-time earning Quarter Horse competitors in the history of racing in Indiana.
“I hated not to run him in it (the Born Runner), so we have the last two years,” said the trainer. “I kept saying, ‘Well, I’m going to retire him,’ but he pulls up so sound. He’s so consistent. He’s probably 16 hands and 1,500 pounds, but he’s a gentle giant. He’s just a special horse, one you want to keep forever.”
Future plans for the gelding include the Bob Woodard Memorial, although his trainer noted that retirement also is an option. Greg Morrison bred WH Design By Dash out of winner Fast Mans Dash, dam of 100% money earners from 9 starters, includ- ing additonal stakes winner WH Johnnie Boy Red.
Beach Cartel (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee) & Jose Beltran were 2nd for Sheri Miller & trainer Randy Smith. DHD Nunzio (Escondido Beach-Mi Corona) was 3rd under Natasha Fritz for Benjamin Delgado & trainer Saul Perez. Followed by Beach Bum Eddie (Escondido Beach-Carman Copy), Izzy Bleu Bayou (Escondido Beach-Miss Louisiana Blue), Tru Lee Quick (La Jollaroid-Watch Im Quick TB), HH Kentucky Krome (La Jollaroid- Shakem Jake), Dreamers Liaison (Sixes Liaison- Dreamers Cartel), Keen Liaison (Sixes Liaison-Keens Cat) and Jesstotuff (Jess Special-Tuff Chiclet) completed the order of finish.
