New Mexico Brds.’ Derby-RG3
TEMPTING STAR GAZER
by Tracy Gantz
Tempting Star Gazer surprised many in the $39,600 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby-RG3 at SunRay Park on May 11. He went off at 18-1, the second- longest shot on the board, and scored a huge victory.
The start eliminated the favorite, A Passion For Flashn, who was listed as having an “unprepared start” and came away last. Jockey Adrian Ramos guided Tempting Star Gazer out of the 4-gate on top, though they had to battle just about the entire field in a close contest. Tempting Star Gazer received every call and kept his head in front at the wire for his first stakes victory, completing the 400 yards in :19.553 and posting a career-high 95 speed index.
Wesley Giles trains Tempting Star Gazer for owners Jose Espinosa and Jill Giles. Espinosa bought Tempting Star Gazer for $23,000 at the 2016 Ruidoso New Mexico-bred Yearling Sale. In 2017, the gelding ran third in the New Mexican Spring Futurity-RG2.

Mamacita Cartel scored her first stakes win in the $39,200 Jimmy Drake Stakes at SunRay Park on May 25.

The filly now has a race record of 4(1)-1-2 from 11 starts. Her resume includes a fourth-place finish in the 2017 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby. Mamacita Cartel brought home the $24,000 winner’s share of the Jimmy Drake purse for owner/breeder David Bloomer and trainer Cynthia Gonzalez.
