Garañones Futurity-RG2
TEXANA CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
There were 200 Mexican bred runners who entered in the 22 qualifying races for the final and consolation of the 18th running of the Garañones Futurity, held June 19-20 over a distance of 300 yards at the Hipodromo de las Americas. After the withdrawal of 11 of them and one more whose action was annulled for having thrown the rider, only 188 participated to dispute the right to obtain a part of the multi-millionaire peso purse.
There were two days of great anticipation
to see those whose genetics, breeding, training and skill on the track would give them the right to make history in Quarter Horse racing.
The best qualifying time was obtained by the filly AG Navigating Steph on the second day of trials in :14.974, being the only one to overcome the barrier of 15 seconds. On the first day, JE Megatron was the fastest of the day with :15.035, placing immediately below the aforementioned filly as second in the qualifying times.
The final took place on July 11, with only nine contenders due to the retirement of JE Deja Vu Risk from Cuadra H-R. The bettors
favored AG Navigating Steph and BR Chivali Champ, in that order.
Sea Jack (#6) stumbled
as he departed but recovered
and the race flowed rapidly.
although BR Chivali Champ
did not have the best start,
but he kept the pace while
gradually deviating towards
the center of the track and
interfering with Sea Jack very
close to the finish. Texana
Cartel, who was the first to break from the 10-gate, moved freely at high speed, well man- aged by Paul Osvaldo Rodriguez, and in the last strides maintained a nose advantage over BR Chivali Champ, leaving him in second place, as confirmed by the official finish photo.
It took :14.85 (SI 101) for Texana Cartel
to complete her feat, after having qualified in race nine on June 20 with a time of :15.092 as the eighth best in the qualifying ladder, under rider Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez. It is her second win in four outings, and her first classic, for
which she added earnings of 1,729,970 pesos ($86,168 U.S. approx.).
The new champion belongs to Rancho El Suspiro and is the breeding of Cuadra Presita, owner of the stallion Danny Cartel and the mare La Texana Tree (by Oak Tree Special). It was Dr. Anselmo Aguilar who received the trophy awarded by the Mexican
Association of Quarter Horse of Breeders and Horsemen (AMCCCCM), of whose Board
of Directors he is a member, being accompa- nied by several of the members in the award ceremony. They also gave the respective buckle to jockey Paul Osvaldo Rodriguez and trainer Ismael Ayala Salas.
The futurity raised $5,759,250 pesos (approx. $286,864 U.S.), of which $4,118,975 pesos (approx. $205,163 U.S.) went to reward the finalists in decreasing percentages according to their order of arrival at the finish line. For the
