AQHA John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge
MOONIN CORONA
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Only six two-year-old participants ran in the AQHA John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge, and those were given the “hair
test” three weeks before the race from which they tested negative for banned or regulated substances according to the rules in force for that program. The purse was $786,920 pesos ($39,265 U.S. approx.), which was contested in 350 yards over a good track.
None of the participants had won a race in their still brief careers. Only the filly Bombay Temptress had three second-place finishes in as many starts, so she was the wide favorite in the betting.
In the race, Sheza Country Doc (#3) drifted inward and made moderate contact with Notorious Gray (#2), but he quickly recovered and continued his path, leav- ing the offender behind. On the right side, Moonin Corona (#6) advanced decisively
under the command of
Yair Daniel Báez Soto to lead the action with resolve until crossing the finish line 1-length ahead of Notorious Gray in second.
The race time was :17.57 for an 82 speed index, and she also broke her “Maiden” in her second start at the track, taking to her account $ 393,460 pesos ($19,632 U.S. approx.).
