Utah Bred Futurity
HEAR ME ROARRR
by John Moorhouse
Hear Me Roarrr proved to be quite sound in her second stakes race, winning the $49,140 Utah Bred Futurity by 3/4-length at Wyoming Downs on July 3.
Riley Moosman trains Hear Me Roarr, who finished the 350-yard race in :17.978, posting an 84 speed index while running against a 5 mph headwind. That was actually a tick slower than her :17.866 run in the trials.
After finishing third in her June 18 trial and log- ging the 5th-quickest qualifying time, Hear Me Roarr bounced back with plenty of speed to win the futu- rity. She broke on top from the seven-hole and made
a gate-to-wire run to victory. Rider Jesus Canales had the filly in front by 3/4-lengths going into the stretch and she held on to win by that same margin.
Keith Nellesen owns the two-year-old gray filly, who now holds two victories in four career starts— hitting the board in every race thus far since making her debut in April at Weber Downs, where she
went on to place third in the May 1 running of the Hadley/Giles Futurity.
McColee Land & Livestock bred Hear Me Roarrr out of Aquafina, a 2008 mare who placed in a graded stakes in her own career as a competitor.
Moosman also trains SP Echo Mountain (JR Dynasty Mountain-Echo Creek Canyon), who finished second by a neck for Dennis Woolsey. Joe Dominguez drew the riding assignment. Buttered Cookie (Moonin The Eagle-Ivory Butter) hit the board in third place for owners Jay Pitcher and Randy Peterson. Pitcher also trains the filly, who
had Clay Teeter in the irons/ The remaining order of finish was Robs Runnin Pistol (Glock-Miss Runnin), Pendleton (EC Jet One-Princess Duma), Rayshas Kidd Trax (Kiddy Up-Rayshas Pink Sky), Miss Eye Sito (Pappasito-Miss Eye Stocks), Lola 157 (Kiss My Hocks-Mia Ta Fame) and Boondarbian (JR Dynasty Mountain-Splash Talk). BLACK FRYDAY
by Tracy Gantz
Black Fryday gave owner Charlie Mejia his biggest win so far in Quarter Horse racing when he won the $25,000 Independence Day Handicap-G3 wire-
to-wire at Los Alamitos on July 2. Mejia has only had horses for a few years, and he called Black Fryday “the best horse I’ve owned.”
With Ramon Sanchez aboard, Black Fryday made an excellent start from the outside post. He ran with several on the lead throughout the 300 yards, poking his head in front at the wire to win in :15.428.
Jorge Farias trains Black Fryday for Mejia, who has owned the gelding since his return to the races this year. The late Ron Hartley had purchased Black Fryday for $30,000 at the 2016 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. For Hartley, Black Fryday won the 2018 Southern California Derby-G2 and Governor’s Cup Derby-RG3. Hartley died in early 2020.
Dr. Steve Burns bred Black Fryday in California from his homebred winning mare Ruths Chris. The mare has produced nine winners from 15 starters, including multiple stakes winner Stripsteak and stakes-placed Yourdarkestnitemare and Capitol Grille. Ruths Chris is a half-sister to three stakes winners.
Dan Moon’s homebred Jet Wings One (EC Jet One-Wayward Wings) finished second. Jose Nicasio rode the 3-year-old filly for trainer Monty Arrossa. Jet Wings One has three wins and two seconds in five starts, including a victory in the 2021 Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge.
Armando Cervantes rode Victorio Jess JQM (Apollitical Jess-Personal Glory) to third for trainer Paul Jones and owner Arden Sue Floyd Family Trust. The 4-year-old gelding has won three allowance races, and this is his first stakes-placing.
Completing the field were Pesky (Favorite Cartel- Quirky), Firebrand (Walk Thru Fire-Flare Checking), Ms Ko (Corona Cartel-Whatta Knockout) and Gray Invader (Royaltys Choice-Slick Invader).
