Mark T Bars Stakes
FIRST LADY PERRY
by Michael Cusortelli
Scott McDaniel’s First Lady Perry broke sharply on the lead from the 3-post and sprinted to a wire-to-wire 3/4-length victory in the $15,000 Mark T Bars Stakes at Arizona Downs on July 7.
Trained by John Allred and racing against a reported 7-mph head wind, First Lady Perry went 400 yards in :19.621 under jockey Kevin Carbajal. The 5-year-old daughter of 1994 Champion Two Year Old Mr Jess Perry earned a 98 speed index and $9,000 from her third career stakes win.
First Lady Perry was coming off of a second- place finish, 1 1/2-lengths behind winner Valentin JQM, in the 250-yard $15,000 Wayne Brasher Memorial Stakes on June 8. The mare was bred in Utah by McColee Land and Livestock LLC, and she is out of First Lady Amber, an unraced daughter of Champion Heza Fast Man.
First Lady Perry’s second dam, the winning First Down Dash mare My Lady Amber, ran third in Wicked Winner’s 1998 Ruidoso Derby-G1. Campaigned in two states, including California, First Lady Perry has banked $79,983 from 19 outs, and her six wins include the 2018 AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity.
DF Favorite Honor (Favorite Cartel-Personal Honor) finished second and earned $3,000 for his owner, Jose de Jesus Torres. Martin Osuna rode the 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelding for trainer Jesus Torres-Casas.
L Bar D Classic Trip (Mr. Nightlinger-Be First Rose) ran third, 1 1/4-lengths behind First Lady Perry, and banked $1,500 for owner Amy Nelson, who also trained the 6-year-old Oregon-bred geld- ing. Aaron Belloc rode L Bar D Classic Trip.
Republic Anne (Apollitical Jess-First Fancy Racy), YN Mira Linda (Leading Texan-Jess Feelin Blue), and Sawmill Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Paint Your Beau) completed the order of finish.
Belles Stakes
OLENA SANGRIA
by John Moorehouse
Olena Sangria’s connections toasted to success on July 4, as the veteran filly posted her first- ever stakes victory in her 35th career out, winning
the $16,475 Belles Stakes at Fair Meadows.
This marked the first win of the year for Olena
Sangria, who faced 5-3 odds at post time. Trained by Juliana Mancillas, the mare broke well from the inside starting gate and ran a steady second at the first call before overtaking Corona Relentless to lead by a 1/2-length going into the stretch. Olena Sangria held on to win by that same margin, cover- ing the 350 yards in :17.774 for a 93 speed index.
Rafael Haros owns Olena Sangria, a six-year- old mare who logged her fourth career victory. The $10,500 winner’s share of the purse increased Olena Sangria’s total earnings to $139,433.
Olena Sangria is no stranger to stakes company; she qualified for the Heritage Place Futurity-G1 in 2017 and finished third in the Will Rogers Juvenile Challenge later that year. She also holds a third- place performance in last year’s running of the Miss Ellen Stakes at Will Rogers Downs.
Makynzie Brown and Robbin Caldwell bred Olena Sangria and own her dam, MT Rob This Corona, a 2008 mare. Olena Sangria was foaled in Oklahoma and has raced exclusively on the Sooner State’s Quarter Horse circuit.
Corona Relentless (Hes Relentless-Coronas Concierge), the post-time favorite, finished second for owner Roberto Zuniga-Rios and trainer Lucio Espiritu. Roman Cruz drew the riding assignment. Lotas First (Lota PYC-Crazy Down Corona) finished third despite flipping in the gate prior to the start
of the race. Reyna Aguilera is the owner and Jose Aguilera is the trainer. Jhaciel Soto did the riding.
Lota Doux (Lota PYC-Vancouver) rounded out the order of finish. First Luck Lark and Fly N Tell were both scratched.
Rocky Heinzig Stakes
RELENTLESS DOLL
by Danny Camp
Relentless Doll was relentless in his pursuit to victory in the $16,850 Rocky Heinzig Stakes. He stepped away from the 6-post in third. Within
a couple of jumps he was in front, but not by much. With encouragement from jockey Daniel Torres, they went to the front and crossed the wire a neck in front. Trained by Samuel Gaytan Jr., Relentless Doll completed the 350 yards :17.863 to earn a 91 speed index.
The gelding also earned the first place check worth $10,284 for owner Victor Gardia Gaytan, which boosts his total lifetime earnings to $78,387. His race record stands at four wins out of nineteen starts.
Buddy Albin bred Relentless Doll out of multiple winner Lil Miss Party Doll, half-sister to Jazz Party TB, who finished third in the TTA Sales Futurity. Lil Miss Party Doll has produced 100% winners from five starters, including Remington Park Juvenile winner Whirlaway Winner. Relentless Doll is her second stakes winner and top earner. His second dam is the lightly raced Thoroughbred mare Party Doll.
Rolling Along (Kiddy Up-Hits Keep Coming) finished second under Gonzalo Gutierrez for owner Gerardo Arroyo and trainer Diego Arroyo. The geld- ing was a finalist in the 2018 Speedhorse Derby.
Hes All Corona (Dominyun-Shes All Corona) and jockey Justine Klaiber finished in third for owner/trainer Longino Garcia. This marks the gelding’s first stakes event.
Jesta Wave (Apollitical Jess-Wave Bac), Olena Sangria (Dashair-Mt Rob This Corona), Doubters Beware (Im A Fancy PYC-Cresecent Shore TB), HRR Dreamer (High Rate Of Return-Ally Kazaam), Southernstylemission (Five Bar Cartel- Southern Formed) and Giant Courage (Captain Courage-Deelish) completed the order of finish.
