Tami Purcell Handicap
J BEST BOOGIE
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Jaime Gomez knows when horses need a rest, which paid off when J Best Boogie captured the $15,000 Tami Purcell Handicap at Los Alamitos on July 24.
J Best Boogie hadn’t run since the trials for the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1 last November. She had won her trial, but not in a fast enough time to qualify.
In the 350-yard Tami Purcell, named for the first female jockey to win the All American Futurity-G1 (in 1997) and Champion of Champions-G1 (in 1996), J Best Boogie came away well from the rail and went to the lead. Though favored A Dash Of Sign tried to chal- lenge, J Best Boogie scored by 1/2-length in :17.489.
Gomez owns and trains J Best Boogie, a two- time winner last year at two. She has never finished worse than third in seven starts.
Rick Beck bred J Best Boogie in California from stakes-placed Boogie Special, a mare bred and raced by Gomez. Boogie Special has produced nine win- ners from 16 starters, including stakes winner and $421,357-earner Boogies Special Dash and multiple Graded stakes-placed This Boogie Fires.
A Dash Of Sign (Tempting Dash-A Tres Of Paint) ran second under jockey Ruben Lozano and trainer Mike Robbins. Reliance Ranches LLC owns the filly, who ran second in the May 23 Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge.
Gomez also trains third-place The Best Feeling (Docs Best Card-Stuckonafeeling), ridden by Jose Nicasio. Gomez owns The Best Feeling, winner of last year’s Far West Futurity, with Juan Moya.
Completing the field were Gotta Corona Jess (Apollitical Jess-Gotta Corona Pop), Jess Fortunate (Mr Jess Perry-Fire And Delight), and Red Rosy Cartel (Corona Cartel-Fast Red Rose). Perrys Everlasting (Mr Jess Perry-Designateddriver) lost the rider after bumping at the start.

SEATTLE CARTEL
by John Moorehouse
Fastest qualifier Seattle Cartel entered the Adequan Grants Pass Derby Challenge with high expectations. The gelding lived up to his billing, winning by a nose in
the $47,498 stakes held July 5 at Grants Pass Downs. A Jose Rosales Gomez trainee, Seattle Cartel didn’t
quite match his field-topping :19.614 run in the June
21 derby trials, but he still had enough speed to win the stakes final. After breaking from the No. 8 hole, he was running was fourth going into the stretch. Jockey Cesar Moreno urged the gelding to a late bid on the outside, and he was up at the wire by a nose.
The stakes-winning 400-yard trip took :19.788, registering a 102 speed index. Owner Javier Olmos cashed a $21,849 payday that improved Seattle Cartel’s total earnings to $26,949. He bred Seattle Cartel out of Misterious Lady, a lightly-raced 2008 mare.
Olmos home-bred Seattle Cartel, who, after making just one out as a two year old, has bounced back nicely during his sophomore campaign. The gelding is unde- feated through his first three starts in 2021, and this latest victory qualifies Seattle Cartel for the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3.
Dahock crossed the finish line in second, but stewarts disqualified him to fourth for interference. That elevated Super Bowl Sunny Day (PYC Prize Time-Holland Last Star), another Gomez trainee, to runner-up honors. Gilberto Madrigal owns the gelding, who had Taylor Smith in the irons. Jess Ozzy (Jess My Moon-Jungle Song) officially finished third for Ralph Young and Sandy Battles. Treece Figueroa trains the gelding, who had Jose Figueroa aboard.
Dahock (Zoomin For Bux-Lanty Bug) was fourth, followed by Relentless Six (Hes Relentless-Struttin Sixs), Miss Fancy Alleia (Im A Fancy PYC-Count Alleia), Louisiana Bunny (Louisiana Senator-My Best Bunny Yet), Marcelino (Sixthirteen TB-LA Dvana), Lionized (Bodacious Dash-Flyin Lion), and One Sweet Lippy (One Sweet Jess-Adasha Lucky Lippy).
