Most pedigree advocates believe that to have Inbreeding to Superior Females be effective, the common ancestor (mare) will have her multiple crosses no further back
in the pedigree than in the fifth generation. Sometimes we see some exceptions.
Steppin For Te, a daughter of Azure Te, is a stakes placed winner of $123,584. She was third in the 1983 Rainbow Derby. Her dam is Lucky Stepper by Three Chicks by Three
Bars, and her dam is Lucky Pass by Top Deck. Lucky Pass is out of Bright Charge by Depth Charge. Steppin For Te has a breeding pattern of 4x5 to Quickly. THE NEEDED OUTCROSS
By bringing these last two runners in,
we are transitioning to one of the reasons for Pumphrey and Wells’ interest in Azure Te. The Quarter Horse racing industry was stocked with great horses from the Three Bars, Top Deck,
and Leo bloodlines, and all combinations of these horses. So, it was time for an outcross for these bloodlines. We have not gone into detail, but we have seen some of that in mares covered by Azure Te that represent the bloodline we have already looked at in this Speedlines. Steppin
For Te shows us that her dam Lucky Stepper was a granddaughter of Three Bars and Top Deck. The Advance Man was out of Howdy Sis, a daughter of Jet Deck a grandson of Top Deck, and Jet Deck was out of Miss Night Bar, a granddaughter of Three Bars. The dam of Howdy Sis is Miss Breeze Bar, a granddaughter of Three Bars.
One of the great breeders that brought
the blood of Three Bars, Top Deck and Leo together was Bud Warren of Perry, Oklahoma. Warren loved short horse racing bringing his great stallion Leo into his program. When
he wanted to stretch his Leo mares out in distance to be more competitive at longer distances, he bred to Three Bars and brought
