Luis Contreras rode Shining Source to a come-from-behind victory in the December 7, 6 1/2-furlong Johnie L. Jamison Handicap (R) for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park.
Racing for Barton Ranch Stables LLC and trainer Blake Rust, Shining Source defeated Go For A Stroll by 2 1/4-lengths in 1:13.94. In addition to banking the $51,000 winner’s share of the $85,000 purse, the 6-year-old gelding missed by just 49/100ths of a second off the track record set by Isn’t He Clever in the 2013.
Shining Source was bred by Susan K. Vescovo, and the gelding was shortening in dis- tance off of his 2nd place finish, a neck behind longshot winner Hute, in the 1-mile Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship (R) at Zia Park on Oct. 29. Shining Source is one of 17 winners from 34 starters sired by Source.
Shining Source’s dam, the winning mare Shine Miss Comet, has produced two winners from as many starters, including Kimbell, a winning half sister to Shining Source who won the Peppers Pride New Mexico Cup Championship (R) for fillies and mares at Zia
Park on Oct. 29. The gelding traces back to his fourth dam, Goldian, a stakes-winning daugh- ter of the Nantallah stallion Ridan who ran second in the 1971 Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita Park and was a half sister to stakes win- ner By Popular Demand. A ’69 foal, Goldian foaled three stakes winners, including multiple stakes winner Pass Of Gold.
Shining Source was sent to post at odds
of 8-1 in the field of 11 and returned an $18 win mutuel. The gelding has won nine of 36 starts, including four of his 15 outs at Sunland Park, and he has banked $352,458. His season record includes 1-length victory in the March 18, $85,000 New Mexico State University Handicap (R) at Sunland.
A 16-1 longshot, Go For A Stroll completed a $366 ($2) exacta. Way Nifty ran third,
four lengths behind Shining Source, and was followed by Perty Dirty Dude, 2-1 favorite Citizen Geller, Hute, Thunder Dome, Forger, Dyno Dom, Hit A Lick, and Soaring Cid.
Go For A Stroll pocketed the $17,000 runner- up share of the purse to push his earnings to $196,633 for owner R.D. Hubbard, who also
bred the sophomore son of Attila’s Storm. The gelding has won four of 12 starts, and he won two stakes during his 3-year-old season, including the 1 1/16-mile, $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby (R) in March.
Way Nifty is a homebred 4-year-old gelding by The Way Home owned by Larry Strain and Helen Nave, both of Hobbs, New Mexico. Way Nifty has won six of 19 starts, and the $8,500 third-place share of the Johnie L. Jamison Handicap purse boosted his bankroll to $147,427.
Club Cutie, a 15-`1 longshot, ran second to complete a $44 ($2) exacta.
Money Order, Poseidon Aquarius, Roll Tech Roll, McGoldie, Movin On, Ghost Of Creebear, Infinite Bloom, and Prissy Bay com- pleted the order of finish.
Country Club Cutie is owned by J.D. Barton, Jay Barton, and Barbara Barton, the filly has earned $26,200 from two outs. Money Order is a homebred campaigned by R.D. Hubbard. The filly has earned a total of $30,230.

Fast Gator, a homebred daughter of Diabolical, kept her perfect record intact with a half-length victory in the Dec. 30, $85,000 La Senora Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year- old fillies at Sunland Park.
Prepped by Henry Dominguez for owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, Fast Gator covered 6 furlongs in 1:09.16 while scoring her fourth win in as many starts. Ry Eikleberry rode the filly, who banked the $51,000 winner’s share of the purse.
Fast Gator is one of 10 official black-type stakes winners sired by Diabolical.
A half brother to two-time Group 3 stakes winner What A Name (IRE), Diabolical has sired the earners of more than $6.3 million, including multiple stakes winners That’s The Idea and Diabolical Dame. The stallion is owned by Fred Alexander and J. Kirk Robison, and he will stand the 2018 season for a $4,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Fast Gator is one of four winners from as many starters produced by Gator Prowl, a
10-year-old daughter of Roar Of The Tiger who won the ’10 Marshua Stakes at Laurel Racecourse in Maryland. The filly is a half sister to Gator Heat, the winner of the 2015 Dine Stakes (R) at SunRay Park.
Fast Gator’s fourth dam, the winning Florida-bred Copelan mare Future Answer, is a half sister to Whata Brainstorm, the winner of the 2001 Pan American Handicap (G2)
at Gulfstream Park in Florida. Fast Gator traces back to her fifth dam, What A Future, a daughter of Roberto who was a half sister to Journey At Sea, the winner of the ’82 Swaps Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Fast Gator has earned $204,785. The filly’s three stakes wins include a 1-length victory in the
5 1/2-furlong Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs on Sept. 3, and a 3 1/2-length score in the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Lassie Championship (R) at Zia Park on Oct. 29.
Fast Gator was sent to post as the 4-5 favor- ite and returned a $3.60 win mutuel. Country
