4-lengths, qualifying the fastest. Los Alamitos assigned post positions for the final by giving connections a choice as their horse’s name was drawn randomly.
“How could I not select post one?” said O’Dell.
Despite a talented field that included Golden State Million Futurity-G1 winner Whizkey Glasses, Bomb Cyclone went off as the even-money favorite. Eduardo Nicasio, who has piloted him in each of his races, was back aboard. Though Nicasio has won many big races, the Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity had so far eluded him.
Not this time. Bomb Cyclone broke perfectly, and in a matter of strides it was evident that the only race would be for second. He glided down the track, with very little urging from Nicasio except for the first few strides. The final margin was 2-lengths, but it could have been more. Bomb Cyclone completed 440 yards in :19.513 with a wire-to-wire performance.
“When he broke, I knew by the second stride that he was gone,” said Rosenthal. “That’s just the way he runs.”
Bomb Cyclone has a great support staff in O’Dell and his team, especially O’Dell’s
assistant, “Maloso” Adalberto Aceves. O’Dell explained that about a week before the final, Bomb Cyclone popped an abscess in a foot and that Aceves spent much time taking care of it.
“I can’t thank Maloso enough,” said O’Dell. “He cares about those horses so much. He deserves a lot of the credit.”
Both O’Dell and Rosenthal commented on Bomb Cyclone’s gentle nature.
“He’s such a people-person kind of horse,” said O’Dell. “He loves you to hug on him.” “He loves people,” said Rosenthal. “He’s
the kindest, sweetest horse.”
Bomb Cyclone found his way to
Rosenthal’s barn and her heart through
his big brother Powerful Favorite, who had qualified for the previous night’s Champion of Champions-G1 but finished fifth. Connie had purchased Powerful Favorite for her husband, Bob, who died before the gelding even started. Powerful Favorite became a millionaire, and Connie has since purchased others in that family.
It’s quite a family. Dr. Steve Burns
bred Bomb Cyclone using the nick that is producing an amazing string of runners:
the stallion Favorite Cartel and the multiple graded stakes-winning broodmare Remember Me Rose. Full siblings have been selling regularly for six figures, including the 2020 yearling colt Cyber Attack, sold to Rosenthal Ranch for $400,000 at the 2021 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale.
