KJ Desparado did something no other Quarter Horse has ever done: He added a win in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1 to his All
American Futurity-G1 triumph. No horse had ever pulled off that double before. That raised his total earnings to $2,104,961.
“We are really proud of him,” said John Lee, who owns the gelding with his wife, Kathy, and their good friend and business partner Ruben Mares.
The Texas Classic Futurity did not look easy. Rain forced the race onto a sealed, sloppy surface at Lone Star Park on Nov.
27. The only time KJ Desparado had ever encountered an off track was in the Rainbow Futurity-G1, though his seventh place finish in that race was perhaps due more to getting hit from both sides by rivals.
In the Nov. 6 Texas Classic Futurity trials, KJ Desparado excelled, defeating the field by 1 1/4-lengths and qualifying the
