New Mexico Classic Derby-RG2
WOODYS GOLD
by John Moorehouse
With about 150 horses in his charge this year, trainer Clinton Crawford has not had a lot of time to stop and smell the roses, or, well, stop and do anything.
He definitely seemed to savor the latest win by one of his trainees, Woodys Gold. After qualifying for three graded derbies but making middle-of-the-pack finishes in the stakes finals, the sophomore gelding came through in the $205,940 New Mexico Classic Derby-RG2 on Oct. 31 at Zia Park.
“That was probably the best performance that I’ve seen out of him,” Crawford said. “And he’s given me some good performances.”
Woodys Gold already had tasted victory in stakes company, taking the 2020 running of the New Mexico State Fair Futurity-G3. He also placed second in that year’s versions of the Mountain Top Futurity-G2 and the Zia Futurity-G1. For his career, Woodys Gold now holds five wins in 14 starts and notched his second triumph of the year. The $100,911
