Governor’s Stakes
HEAD PATRON
by Jess Johnson
Fastest qualifier from the Oct. 9 trials, two-year-old chestnut gelding Head Patron dominated the field to win the $144,897
Governor’s Stakes at Indiana Grand Race Course in Shelbyville, Indiana, on Oct. 30.
Head Patron broke sharply over the sloppy track from post position six. He was out on the lead and pulled away throughout the contest, winning the 350 yard race in :17.599 by 2 1/2-lengths for
a speed index of 101.
Head Patron is by Zoomin for Bux and out of Dash Leader. He was ridden by jockey James Flores.
“He couldn’t have done any better and really showed the speed he has. It was a real special win for us,” said trainer Randy Smith.
Owners Jon and Brant Barley bred and raised Head Patron as well as his dam.
Alex Picov Memorial Futurity
In years past, they have used Brant’s uncle, Larry Sharp, as their trainer.
“We knew we had a pretty good horse
after his allowance race at Remington, but didn’t know where to go with him next. Larry used to be the one I would go to for advice and now that he’s gone, I didn’t know if I could do it by myself,” Brant said. They chose Indiana as a next stop because of the quality of stakes
races they host.
Head Patron earned
$80,498 for his wire-to-wire effort and now has total lifetime earnings of $100,928. From seven starts, he is now a three-time race winner, with one second place finish and two third place finishes.
Second fastest qualifier El Rubio Corona dueled with third-fastest qualifier All Out in his trial for the win. A two- year-old colt by Coronado
Cartel out of Lucky Call Me, El Rubio Corona was the second fastest qualifier and finished second best in the finals with Sergio Ramirez aboard. El Rubio Corona had previously qualified for the Speedhorse Futurity, however this was his first blacktype finish for owner/ trainer Ricardo Martinez.
Count Down lost late by a neck to finish third. The filly by Ivory James and out of Rare Encore was a $19,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale purchase. She is trained by owner Anthony Cunningham and was ridden by Rolando Pina.
Followed by MG To Fancy Macho (El Macho Prieto Boy-Too Specially Fancy), All Out (Coronado Cartel-Lucky Call Me), BP Blaze Of Glory (BV Travelin Soldier-Tempting Jolie), Prize Kiss (Kiss My Hocks-Fast Prize Janie), Stolin Home Brew (Brindis Por Cayenne- Swingin Brew). A Little Louie was scratched.
his earnings to $79,370. His resume includes a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length win as the fastest qualifier in the Sept. 15, $51,622 Ontario Sires Futurity.
Eye Live For Candy (A Revenant-Eyesa Candy Maker) finished second under Ismael Mosqueira for owner Milena Kwiecien and trainer Jason Pascoe. FIRST COLD WAVE
by Michael Cusortelli
First Cold Wave, a homebred son of the First Down Dash stallion Cold Hard Dash and the fourth-fastest qualifier, got up at the wire
to win Canada’s richest Quarter Horse race, the $93,047 Alex Picov Memorial Futurity at Ajax Downs on Oct 27.
Prepped by Jason Pascoe for owner Robert Bailey and racing against a reported 17-mph head wind, First Cold Wave
covered 400 yards in :20.121
on a track officially labeled “good,” and his margin of victory was a short nose from Eye Live For Candy. Brian Bell rode the sorrel gelding.
“He’s just an awesome horse,” said Bell of First Cold Wave. “I saw (Eye Live For Candy) coming at me, but this guy just jumped out a few more strides and got it done.”
First Cold Wave was bred in Ontario, and he was
coming off of a third-place finish, 1-length behind second-fastest qualifier Lethal Tres
Seis, in the second of two Alex Picov Memorial Futurity trials on Oct. 6. The gelding is out of Cassies Carver, a winning daughter of World Champion Wave Carver, who ran third in the 2012 Fort Erie Derby. He traces back to his third dam, Old Love Of Mine, a winning daughter of
two-time World Champion Dash For Cash and a finalist in the 1983 Kindergarten-G1 and Dash For Cash-G1 futurities at Los Alamitos.
First Cold Wave made his career debut with a 10th-place finish in a 300- yard maiden-special-weight dash at Remington Park on May 14. The gelding has won four of seven races, and the $37,220 winner’s share of this purse from his second career stakes victory boosted
