Subasta Selecta Derby
ESPEJO FUSILERO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
There were 38 horses registered to participate in the trial races for this important derby, which were held on Oct. 3, 2021, at a distance of 400 yards on a muddy track. However, three of them were scratched, with 35 participat-
ing in these trials from which the ten fastest advanced to the final.
The trials were highlighted by the perfor- mance of Espejo Fusilero, setting the fastest qualifying time with :19.200, and that of his stablemate Feuture Horse with :19.327, a time that was equaled by Blazzin Fritz.
As expected, the two stablemates with the top times attracted the preference of the public on Oct. 17, the day of the finals.
In those, Bonny Eagle and Aint Eagle found themselves in a situation that was complicated for Bonny Eagle as she did not have enough room to advance. AG Barajo De Oro began to slow down on the right side of the track until he fell, seriously injured but leaving his rider Alejandro Almazán unharmed.
In the midst of these actions, Espejo Fusilero dominated the race at ease from the 1-post, the same position from which he
qualified in his trial win two weeks before. He had an explosive start and then continued to widen the difference from the
group, well led by the jockey
José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, until they crossed the finish line 1 1/2-lengths ahead
of Easy Perry Cartel, who started from the 10-post.
Espejo Fusilero completed the 400 yards in :19.38 while posting a 96 speed index, adding his third classic in
the division of Mexican bred runners since winning the 2020 Garañones Futurity and the respective derby in the current season.
A son of the stallion Carnegie Haul and his cross with Jess Blushing (by Feature Mr Jess), he was bred by Javier Rosique León, in his San Diego Del Espejo barn. After passing through the Select Yearling Sale of 2019, he became the property of the Cuadra Cartas Blancas, which owns him today.
His preparation is in charge of José Ángel Santos Zamudio, who is officially represented
by trainer José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona.
The purse assigned to the Subasta Selecta Derby was $1,780,050 pesos ($86,458 U.S. approx.), of which $747,621 pesos ($36,312 U.S. approx.) was credited to Espejo Fusilero’s account.
The award ceremony of the winning team was headed by Javier Rosique León, President of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, A.C.,
accompanied by his relatives including Javier Ruiz Rosique. The Hipodromo de las Americas was represented by Mauricio Dorantes, Director of Operations.
Easy Perry Cartel, winner of the Mexican Breeders’ Derby Challenge, placed second under Ángel Santillán. The colt is by Jesstified and out of Tessas Decked Out (by Corona
